Good day everyone

I am really taking a shot in the dark here, and I think I know the answer already. I just know people on here are VERY clever lol.

I stay 1100 km from my parents. Now this morning when they want to use the wifi - for some bizarre reason it is asking for the wifi password, which now no one remembers. It was setup like a year ago, without any issues. We setup all their devices (tablet and phones) to connect automatically, now this morning it wants a damn password!!

So I know you have to connect the router to a laptop, login etc to change or see the password. Is their anyone that knows of some secret trick how they can get the password. They don't have a laptop.

The router usually has a username & login on a sticker underneath it. Try that first using the IP address on the sticker. If that doesn't allow you to log in (someone changed the password) you can also reset the router using a pen and that little hole and it'll default to the details on the sticker but it'll also reset any settings the network might be dependent on.

Thank you so much! You are correct, I forgot about resetting it to the default settings.

Will try that...

Thank you!

Before you do that...

Thanks guys, yes we removed the power a few times. Rebooted everything more than once.

I am doing a video call with them at 12 lol... so let's hope the reset to default settings will work. Much appreciated!!

How will they go about setting it up in terms of the internet side of things?

I assume they currently have internet access but dont know the wifi password, ask them to install teamviewer on the desktop then log into the router and change the wifi password before resetting it.

Router logins should be unchanged admin/admin or admin/password

Most modern routers have a WPS button so you can discover and add new devices without typing in a password - that may be easier if it has one? At least until a later stage.

The issue is there were lots of unasked for updates on mobile devices yesterday, last night and this morning on Android devices! If the devices are all set to auto-update, you lose control of the process.
This morning on my Android SS J3 and J6 devices there was a request from 15 Apps that wanted updates including a few Android internal updates. Those blasted things default back to factory settings and cause you lots of hassles IF you allow auto-updates and you have customised many settings.

The lesson is: Carry around a little black book in which you record things, especially for parents and the less savvy devices users you help.

View Saved Wi-Fi Network Passwords

Open the command prompt as admin and type:

netsh wlan show profiles

[..... will bring up a list of the networks you’ve connected to previously ]

netsh wlan show profile name=[profile name] key=clear

[.... under the Security Settings section you’ll see the password listed as Key Content]

That will help if OP used his PC to access his parents' network in the past ---- and he has not at some stage had a major sw update.
