Help Please!!! I think my dog is emo....

So i'm back.... you remember the dog that didn't agree with me....

After calming down and electrifying the whole garden everything went fine i even decided i like him a bit....but now it's thunderstorm time!!!!!! The dog is petrified, oke so when i'm home he lies in the garage and pisses all over himself (he does this inside the house as well, so he stays in the garage in his house or infront the door that goes into the house), when i'm at work or in town he eats the garage door, he even had his head inside but he got stuck, now imagine the lekker storm we had last week in JHB the dog petrified stuck in the garage door, he has no skin left on his head from trying to get in. So i secured the door so he can not hurt himself but he keeps on biting the door until it looks like i slaughtered a pig, his nose and head has no skin his gums are fusked up he is going to break off his teeth.

I'm sorry but every time the weather turns bad i cannot run home for the dog.

HELP HELP HELP !!!!!!

( i cannot leave the garage open it goes into the house and hubby has every power tool on the market):(

Hubby must start thinking of a solution as it is his dog IIRC?

Also go to the vet and ask for a sedative that doesnt knock the dog out just relaxes him enough not to break down the whole house :)

how about building a smallish brick house effect for him where he can feel safe? but bigger than a standard doghouse

We have tried those, doesn't work.... they not strong enough they even said i should try remedy rescue.... nothing, and the thing is i'm not at home when the weather goes bad and i can not keep him drugged out the whole time.....:(

I poured chilly sauce and salt over the door this morning..... but if he doesn't worry about hurting himself i do not think that will work.

I really think he lost his marbles he started this now.... the thunder and door has always been there.

He is acctually a spoilt brat!!! He has a house like that. Thats where we started trying to give him a place outside to feel safe.

Let the dog in the house and comfort the damn thing, i'm sorry but thunderstorms are very traumatic for a dog and you guys took the responsibility of owning said dog, so what are you doing now is kinda like abuse because he is hurting himself and your still not letting him in.

Sorry if this sounds like a harsh post i just love dogs alot and believe having one is like having a child, so let it in and give it so love and make it feel safe.

In this Complex where I live, I see what happens when dogs are left alone all day.
IMO if there is no one home to attend to a dog, people who are away all day, should not keep dogs!

But read and see that i do let him in when i'm at home.:(
Yes it's like having a child and this one i'm sending to a mental hospital.

I have a lady that works for me it means that the dog is alone for maybe two hours a day and when we go visit friends.

I'm not living in a complex i have a huge yard lots of running space.
So you saying that 60% of people with dog should not have them? Because they work? All my friends work and do the same, two of them own Huskies (they do have more brains than boksers) and have no problems.

Why is this a new problem, he is 5 years old and only started hurting himself now. The same house the same garage doors.....?

I'm asking for help, friends that know the dog say i should put it down.

O shoot soz i didn't see that obviously. Yes in that case you have a major problem.

Well if the dog is physically hurting itself then maybe your only option is put him down because a dog living like that is not good and summer we have tons of thunderstorms. I don't people who work should not have dogs. Its a tough call this one.

You either have to knock him out and keep checking the weather so you know when the shyte will hit the fan or put him out his misery.

Thanx

I just do not understand him he was always scared and a bit of whooz with the weather but this is extreme. I really think he has a bit of a problem the kind you need to see doctors about...:(

But kids can be "trained" to shlt you whole house :p.... else maybe just get the dog those dog nappies and make sure he can't hurt himself on the garage door.

He would have to wear a slobber bowl to :D He is a bit big to stay inside.

I'm sorry, but there really is no solution for this. Once a dog has been scarred by a loud noise, its a done deal. We had a dog that was terrified of fireworks, even the smallest little firework would send him into a frenzy (That is why I am so opposed to fireworks).

We would lock him in the garage, and take out all the things that could get destoyed, and would just watch over him.

You can try a sedative from the vet, but that does not really work, and vets are not allowed to give you any drug that goes beyond the point of making the dog a bit relax.

I know this is not the best of news, but unfortunately is all. Put him in the garage, keep an eye on him, make sure he does not hurt himself and make sure there is enough water for him to drink (keeps him from dehydrating by running up and down), and then the really bad part, either you or the hubby has to sit with him while all this is happening.

So good advice, next time you want a dog, get a puppy that was born in the summer months, scientifically, they are less prone to loud noises (as they grow up during thunderstorm periods)

put the dog out seems like he is suffering

I think that should be the last resort, ffs half of the people on the planet are starving thus suffering, I do not see you calling for them to be put down though....

//sorry I just really hate it when people are so quick to say..."Well put it down"

Yes if it is the only way sure but like H_C suggested, build him a small brick room/house thingy where he can go hide and feel safe... also get a 2de and 3de opinion from some other vets about meds....

Taking the life of a companion just because its afraid of thunder is extreme. Remember, dogs are pack animals, and they look to their "leader" in times like this (The alpha dog).

Unfortunately this means either you or your partner needs to take responsibility and fill the role of the alpha dog during this time, most dogs live for attention, and they need you more than ever in these cases.

Maybe get him some snacks, some of the stuff he likes the most, you will spoil him in the end, but it will keep him calm. And when he seems to get agitated, sit with him, feed him a treat, stroke him, scratch him.

Well thats it from Dr Gothan, the bill will be in the mail
