Help plz! p2p not working/very slow

Can anyone out there help me! None of my p2p applications wants to daownload anything (if they download, its really slow) ftp downloads are fine, only p2p!

I don't understand very much about PC's, so if somebody can explain to me how to correct it or what is going on in plain English, I'll be extremely gratefull!

perhaps you should tell us what p2p utils you are using and what MW package you are on.
Also mayabe a history of some kind... like have you had good speeds on p2p before. Are these
slow speeds something new.

I'm on a 128 package, and up till the server crashed in june/july, i had download speeds on p2p of about 10 - 14 Kb/s. I use Warez and Kazaa!

geez dude... your machine probably has so much spyware and crap on it that is probably eating away at your precious bandwdith... and what server crash are you on about??

chances are you will never get good speeds as long as you with Sentech...

p2p, nntp, irc, online gaming, etc do not work at all. They connect and then freeze completely. This has been going on for weeks on my connection and I keep my pc very clean of spyware, etc.
 
I think it's because I'm on 256k and the 256k packages run worse than the 128k - afaik we're still on a different subnet as well - 256k ip's generally start 196.34.x.x while the 128k packages are usually begin 65.x.x.x

I don't think this really explains much though as some 128k users also seem to have non-existent protocols while some 256k users have reported good p2p throughput - so as usual with sensuck it's just a random thing with the normal lack of consistency on their network.

Part of me actually hopes thousands of new subscribers respond to their new ad campaign as I think things would really come to a head then. Can you imagine how hundreds of new subscribers sitting at home during the xmas break might respond to this kind of randomly half-assed service.
 
it would be interesting... I actually cant believe sentech are actually advertising when they know that their service is ****. I have even had Winston Smith admitting that their service is ****... but it would be nice if they could admit that to the people of South Africa... but like all organisations in this country... if there is a buck to be made they will make it...

My p2p used to be great until about 2 weeks ago (+/- 17Kb/s)

Now its crap (1 Kb/s if im lucky)

Didnt make any changes from when it was great till now

Changing towers does not help, moving modem neither

On 256K with 28% signal

Everything else is working OK
 
whistleblower are you serious about the 196 and 65 thing? If i go to www.whatismyip.org it tells me 66.whatever.this.that. So does this mean im on 128k?? (im supposed to be 256k!!) Would someone with 256k please visit that site and post your findings here?
 
I'm on 256K and have a196. IP, but that doesn't mean the rule is "128K have 66. and 256K have 196."
Go do a download from ftp.is.co.za, if you get 30-32KB/s you're on 256K, 14-16KB/s you're on 128K
 
Or you could also just go to a command prompt (start -> run -> "cmd" ->enter) in winXP/win2k and type ipconfig or start->run->"winipcfg" in win98... that is, if you're not behind a local firewall/gateway.

Funny you should say that.. I spent far too much of this weekend setting up a couple of XP boxen as a friend's place- where we were hitting his 256k MyWi quite hard for things like the latest nVidia drivers, etc -I mean, we've got all this bandwidth so why not just get the latest files and be done with it? And while we were waiting for various multimeg files to come down we'd be separately doing things like MSN & IRC - and I know I had ABC going (bittorrent app).

But then I know what I'm doing.
 
bdt, it seems for some reason you find it difficult to accept that just because your sentech modem works fine, not everyone else has the same experience. Your comments are really not very constructive. I am happy for you that you have such a wonderful experience with sentech, that's great, but please understand that there are many (MANY) of us who do not get anything like that kind of quality of service, and it really doesn't have anything to do with whether or not we know what we're doing or not - a lot of the ppl who participate here are in the IT industry and many are from networking backgrounds, and they have the same experience.

I appreciate that for you, the return path signal strength theory makes sense, and maybe it does account for a minor improvement, but, trust me, since the beginning of the year this has been done to death and time and again it has been shown that above a certain modest signal level, speed is not hugely affected.

The real problem clearly lies with sentech, and you are obscuring that fact, which makes me suspicious about your motives, sorry, that's just me being honest. Your theory does nothing to explain why I consistently get 0% packetloss on local connections, but up to 20% packetloss international. And I'm really not lying about p2p, nntp, irc, online gaming, etc not working at all - this started gradually for many users about 3 weeks ago, and continues to be the case. I can also download large files at a fair speed (mostly), it's all the other things that don't work properly that seriously degrade the utility of sentech for me - there is more to the internet than downloading drivers.

That's great, but what do you mean by this? You installed an antennae? You hacked the modem? You tweaked your tcp/ip settings? Please tell us.
