I've finally got Telkom to convert my line to ADSL (barely made the grade) and am now slugging it out trying to get the SMC Barricade SMC7401BRA I bought to establish a link. I'm a Linux user, so the installation CD isn't much help.

It seems like a nice modem in that it contains a servlet which can be set up via a webrowser using any operating system. My problem is I'm overwhelmed by the choices. There are nine encryption options, and neither of the obvious choices PPPoE LLC nor 1483 Bridge IP LLC get the green light on. Could someone who has got a SMC7401BRA running on Telkom please share the secret?

advTHANKSance

Hi, I have a 7404 router that is working fine, perhaps these settings will work for you:
================================================================
DNS1: 196.25.1.1
DNS2: 196.25.1.9
PPoe Enable
IP assigned by ISP: Yes
IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet: 0.0.0.0
VPI/VCI: 8/35
Encapsulation: LLE
Protocol: Bridging
================================================================
I hope this helps

Ok I have a SMC7204BRA and it goes like this...

There is 2 setups: (i have a bridge setup)
1. Set up the atm device (AAL5-0 in my case). This is where you set vpi/vci and LLC settings.
2. Set up a EoA device, this is basically just to tell the modem to bridge the adsl, so that you can setup a PPPoE connection in linux/freebsd/winxp (adsl-setup in linux if you have adsl packages installed)

or after you have done step1, you can change step2 with a PPPoE connection, where you just set it to dhcp mode, leave dns blank, and put in your adsl username/password and the modem will share the internet, in this case you set your linux box's ethernet connection to dhcp mode instead of assigning it an ip yourself...

or you can skip all my steps, and use the quicksetup button...(dunno if your modem's interface has that)
