Help Setup D-Link DSL2500U modem with TP-Link WDR4300 router

I think I have got my connection setup properly, but need some help to check.

I want to the put the D-Link modem in bridge/half bridged mode and use the router to do the connection.

I have setup the d-link in brigde mode basically went to the WAN page, clicked through and set active the "Bridge PPPoE Frames Between WAN and Local Ports" option under the PPPoE WAN interface's options.

I then setup the PPPoe connection on the router.

Everything is running, but the Internet light on the d-link modem is red - is this correct?

I have a TP-Link modem but did something similar a couple of days ago (also with the WDR 4300), although I wanted full bridge mode. I followed the approach in the thread below and it worked for me, maybe read through it and see if it helps, especially the annex A part

We both bought the TP-links at the same time, check your other posts, i have given you some feedback too LOL :)

Everything is working for now - just curious as to why the internet light is red on the D-link?

sorry man, I'm really tired

I'm still having the odd hassle with mine but it does seem a lot more stable now that I've gone full bridge mode with my modem

So I installed my DSL-2500U like last week and I have it running in half-bridge mode, with the Telkom guest account as the one being on the router and all my lights (that should be on) are green. So far mine has been stable for more than a week without any disconnects, where as my old Telkom modem froze like once a day (without having to reboot it though).

The Telkom guest username and password is: guest@telkomadsl / guest
I then dial MWEB, WebAfrica and Afrihost PPPoE connections from MikroTik RouterOS (running on my Microserver), which is connected to a Buffalo 1Gbps router (and 802.11n 300Mbps WiFi AP), which in turn is connected to the ADSL modem.

When you configure the PPPoE WAN connection, then make sure that you have the following settings:
VPI = 8, VCI = 35, Service Category = UBR without PCR
Connection Type = PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE), Encapsulation Mode = LLC/SNAP-BRIDGING
PPP Username = guest@telkomadsl <- you can change these to your default account
PPP Password = guest <- you can change these to your default account
Dial on demand = off
Enable KeepAlive = 30s, 5x
Bridge PPPoE Frames Between WAN and Local Ports = on
MTU = 1492
Enable NAT = on
Enable Firewall = ON
Enable WAN Service = on
Service name = whatever you'd like to enter here - like "internet" or leave it as "pppoe_0_8_35_1" :)

Under the Advanced Setup > DSL, make sure that G.Dmt & ADSL2+ options are enabled. I left the other options on default (Inner pair & Bitswap enabled)

Under Advanced Setup > LAN, I left my DSL-2500U on the same IP address as my old Telkom 5100 modem: IP address = 10.0.0.2, Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
and DHCP server is disabled too.

I hope this helps!

If i leave the telkom guest details on the D-Link, can i leave My actual ISP details on my router?

Okay, didnt work with your settings verbatim.

Internet light is green - i suspect because of the telkom account on the d-link.

I had to enable DHCP and it works now.

Strange because DHCP is also enabled on the router?????

Hmmm, didnt work for long, started finding massive delays when loading sites.

I had to reset the below to factory defaults:

PPP Username = guest@telkomadsl <- you can change these to your default account
PPP Password = guest <- you can change these to your default account
Enable KeepAlive = 30s, 5x

DHCP is now enabled too.

Its work as it should. But all in all, i have no idea what i am doing or why its working. Internet light is still red though :(

If you leave out the PPP Username and Password (instead of setting it to your "actual ISP details"), then the DSL light should still be green, but the Internet light may not be on at all (or red like you said).

If you're not going to enter any details for the PPPoE connection, then you may as well just use the DSL-2500U as a bridged modem.

So if you leave the ADSL modem's DHCP server on, can you set your TP-Link modem to automatically obtain an IP address just for its WAN port, while it can still dial PPPoE connections? If it cannot do that, then you may need to manually setup the WAN IP address on the TP-Link router, where the subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway would be the IP address of the D-Link, and then of course your IP address has to be in the same IP range as the D-Link modem.

I'm really not sure what would cause the slow speeds. Perhaps run a trace route and DNS lookup with tracert <hostname> and nslookup <hostname> commands, respectively, and post the results here...

DSL light is green, the internet light is red - i personally am not concerned about this, but when diagnosing a problem with Mweb or Telkom first thing they ask is what are the lights saying - and one red light is all they need to stop actually helping you and blaming hardware etc.

The TP-Link is set to automatically obtain an IP address.

As for not entering any details for the PPPoE connection, i prefer to do this via the router, and for one simple reason, if i have to change the details, i dont physically need to plug into the router, i can do it over wifi etc etc. So i do actually then want to run the D-Link as a full bridged modem.

Anything else i need to change with regard to the setup to do this (full bridge mode)?

Been trawling a bit on the net, cant believe i cannot find anything which confirms that the internet light will burn red if the if the modem is bridged and the router is making the connection.

I tested using the D-Link DSL2500U as a modem in bridged mode earlier this week and there was definitely not a red light. All lights were green. DSL2500U was in bridged mode and my router between the modem and PC's dialed a PPPoE connection through the modem.

Thanks for that feedback. It means i am doing something wrong :(

Weird thing is everything is working fine. Connection has been solid since last night.

Hmm, now you have me thinking... There were no red lights, that I am sure of. But, I seem to recall the one light was off. Might be the internet light. I will check this week-end.

Please do and let me know.

Thanks

@Ecco, Sorry, I don't have a router to test with me at the moment.
Will have one the coming week and will then test and let you know what lights are on with what colors.

Cool.

Thanks

@Ecco, I tested the D-Link DSL2500U in bridge mode with a MiroTik router and the lights are as follow:
Power: Green
Status: Flicker green as traffic flows
LAN: Flicker green
DSL: Green
Internet: Off (no light)

Thanks dude, appreciate the feedback. Kinda in line with my experience except that my Internet light shows red.

We might be on different firmware versions.

I hope other guys find this thread usefull, because its a bit shocking that there is nothing on the net about this.
