Help start an Active lobby group

Need a couple of weeks to finish my current project, but thereafter I have some spare time, and will gladly join this and other efforts actively!

PS. Thanks to IC, who pointed me to this thread with the link in his sig! ;)

Spokesperson needed

It does not matter how you intend going about lobbying or petitions, by the end of the day you need someone that has the gift of the gap, that is someone that has a presence about him/her that can field any questions, that knows how to convince and or persuade people a person that is comfortable speaking to a large audience etc.

I agree, if we get Mandela or Boesak to support our cause, it will definitely get TV and international coverage. We do need to highlight the positive enrichment that the internet can supply disadvantaged communities to get spokespeople of this stature to get onboard. Maybe we should have two monthly donations, one for a media campaign/litigation and one for donating computers and internet access to disadvantaged communities.

A PayPal button on some prominent websites should make it easy to donate and may even get money in from the international side as well.

Is there is legal opening for us to sue Telkom ?

There are many openings, Telkom has the shoddiest corporate governance one has ever seen, but we don't have the money to do this effectively. If someone finds a few tens of millions of rands lying around, please consider donating it to a 'sue Telkom' effort.

Right! So we need a law-wise person? Surely there must be someone in these forums that would want to be play a prominant role in all of this? If I knew the law I'd be there, but sadly..I don't. How can we go about getting a person educated in the South African law to assist the cause?

Just to let you all know, there are plans in the pipeline to create a short "Introductory Guide to Telecoms in South Africa".

This, we envision, will be about 10 pages long. It will explain in basic language:
1) The state of telecoms in SA
2) The negative effects the state of SA telecoms is having on our economy
3) Key steps to liberalisation that SA needs to follow

There is a lot of confusion out there on the part of telecoms journalists. Many of them seem to lack a proper grasp or a holistic understanding of SA telecoms. We theerfore intend to send such a Guide to media publications which might help them in understanding the situation better.

We also will send such a guide to political parties, to help push them on structuring an appropriate telecoms policy for the party.

We will also make it available for download from the Antitrust website (maybe MaD will link to it from Hellkom as well).

This obviously will take a lot of time - a few months, given that we all have other things to do and I for one can't afford to devote any more time to Telkom issues than I already am. The style of writing of such a guide also needs to be appropriate - cannot come across as too partisan or biased. This is difficult to do. But work on this has begun, and it can be expected probably in March next year.

Great news - just what is needed :)

Deb, any progress? Why should it stop with telecoms, there should be a consumers lobby group for all industries!

Anyway count me in, what can I do to help?

I am extremely distracted at the moment, but getting things done in 'blobs' when I have periods of lucidity and enough energy to sit up.

I swear, I sometimes feel as if this anti-Telkom stuff is a full time job (well not recently, as I have been extremely slack lately, but usually).

Throw some work my way, can't i help you somehow? I think we should start a Debbie2 support thread.

"Introductory Guide to Telecoms in South Africa".
Surely hellkom already carries all this information?
For instance their "Facts and Info" page

Ok, it's past march already, we don't want people to think that when MyADSL says something it doesn't get done (like gov and telk). We should get that guide going.

Maybe we should start a wiki and let the community write the guide instead of one person trying to write it?

Its not without its problems but it should be a good start....
