- help - stuck E220 and Ubunto8.1 can't connect

I wonder if somebody can please help me. I searched this forum but either too blind to see the answer or just plain (you pick the word...)

I am still very n00b with Linux but have setup my other PC on Ubuntu 8.1. The E220 USB HSDPA card is detected and prompt me for a configuration and have selected Vodacom. When selecting Vodacom to try and connected it seems to fail. It seems everyone else with similar cards have no problems. What am I doing wrong?

this is the wrong place to ask this question - go to ubuntu forums for the right answer. If you had given us more than - oh Sh*t I cant fix it I could help.

What we need is the screen shot or at the very least what make of pc/laptop etc you have

no problem, we all start as experts on Linux Obviously I supplied too little - if I knew where to start (other than having read a ton of threads on this forum already including the Vodacom) I would not have asked for help. Even if it is just getting me to read the right stuff - as you rightfully pointed out as MyBroadband being the wrong forum. Pity there is a Linux sub forum thread here - guess my expectations where wrong
I did say I am n00b with Linux? Once I know where to start reading what/where in the billions of articles, it will help. And yes, all will be documented somewhere and easy.
Sure I will go and read those as well.

Rather crapping me out - what will be the information I need to supply to know what to do next:
Desktop PC - Installed Ubuntu 8.1 from Live CD. No modification done to any part. Primary os - nothing else installed/configured than Ubuntu 8.1.
Trying to get to the Internet from the PC by making use of a Vodaphone, Huawei E220 HSDPA modem.

When I connected it to the USB port the following messages come up:

So I click the Configure button.

I press the Forward button

The New Mobile Broadband Connection screen is displayed. It reads as follow:

Service Provider.
Select the Country and service provider.
(South Africa is already selected)

Cell-C
MTN
Virgin Mobile
Vodacom
Vodacom (unrestrickted APN)
************************
I select Vodacom and press the Forward button.

The next screen is stated as:

Summary
Verify information provided:
Country: South Africa
Service Provider: Vodacom
Name: Vodacom

I then click Apply.

The next screen is the Network Connection screen with Vodacom as the option and Press the Close button.

On the Network icon, I press the left mouse button which bring up a drop-down menu with a radio button option for Vodacom.

When the radio button is pressed the Network icon change to 2 dots with circling arrows. After a few seconds, a pop-up screen pointing to the Network icon displays:

Disconnected
The network connection has been disconnected.

If I right-click the Network icon and Edit, then select the Mobile Broadband and then the Vodacom followed by the Edit button, I get the follow:

Basic
Number: *99#
Username:
Password:

Advanced
APN: internet
Network:

PIN:
PUK:


That is all the info I have.
I still hope it is just a setting or 2 that is wrong.

Thx, I must have missed that 1

I will try removing the PIN - and post and update if it worked.

** Updated: Thanks AirWolf!!! Sometimes wading through tons of information can me a daunting task. A simple pointer to another thread did the trick

The bottom line - remove the PIN from the card.

Hey there , I looked at the posting and I must apologise it seems for coming across as too harsh. For this I sincerely apologise.

I am glad you use that old engineering maxim Keep It Simple

I have out of habit on data sims always removed the pin as it is always a major pain in the (*)

How have you found using 8.10?

My E220 worked off the bat on 8.10, but yeah, you have to remove the pin first.

@webslave, I know you didn't direct the question at me, but I am using Ultimate Edition 2.0, and it is only getting better. I did a clean install from 8.04 after backing the data that I wanted to keep, and it was a breeze getting UE 2.0 up and running with my gfx card, and of course the E220.
