I have WinXP Prof & 4 pc's running WIN98se on a network. I installed Telkom ADSL with ADSL Pots Router. I need to setup the network so that win xp share its connection with the rest of the pc's .- other machines must gain access to internet & email through Winxp Internet connection sharing.

Do I need Telkoms ADSL POTS Router Or ADSL POTS USB.?

Have you RTFM?!! Stick your ADSL POTS Router into a hub or switch as well as your PC's, then setup your ADSL Router to provide local IP's (as you only have 4 PC's, use static). Talk to your Router with a browser through 192.168.10.200 and configure it appropriately. You don't need a ADSL POTS USB 'modem' - this would be going backwards...

Just get your PC's networked with their own IP's in the range 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.255

The XP box should have built in PPOE support. The Windows 98 boxes need the software that came with the Router. Install it and each box should be able to connect individually to the net through the network hub. You router should be plugged into the hub ofcourse.

You can use one Telkom ADSL password on all the PC's. They will each get their own IP and thus would not be depending on the XP machine to be running to access the net. Also more efficient as packets are handled better that way.

This will be the setup:

1x HUB
1x Router
5x PC's (One XP and the rest Windows 98)

The router and all the pc's connect to the hub. And BAM!!! Your movin'!!!

Cheers

The Marconi Router not so nice to play around on. Firstly it has a default IP range of 192.168.10.200 which is very unusual. The best way to configure this router is to change it's basic and gateway IP adresses to an adress in the 192.168.0.XXX network which is standard on most networks. I am currently using 192.168.0.254 as the IP of the router, I have also altered it's name to "ADSL" for easier access. Activating the Routers DHCP feature will allow the PCs connecting through it to connect to the net with no IPs or Gateway setings being entered (Great for small LAN parties [:)]). Please remember to SAVE the RESTART the silly Router when each change is made. Chaging the default password is a must.
