I am looking for a news server to connect to that work on a month to month basis.

I don't want to sign a year deal with them as I don't even know how effective it will work.

Please advise if there are good ones that work month to month.

nzbmatrix.com together with astraweb..buddy of mine uses them and only pays month to month

I was on astra web but they have no info on cancellation period or notice. As far as I'm concerned they will charge you $10 for 12 months. I have sent a mail, but are waititng on feedback.

O.k, thanks Gary,

I see you need to contact them if you do not want to renew. It doesn't say how long in advance though.

Another question.

I have unlimited 384 through Saol.

WOuld I need to take the Unlimited speed option or can I just use the normal one where speeds are capped @ 1mbps as my line wont be able to get to that speed in anycase, so I will be wasting 1USD. Or am I missing something here?

Yes, but you would only be saving one dollar.

How many gigs do you think you can grab in a month?

astraweb prepaid 100gb

No contract, no time limit on usage, ssl... nuff said

I have no Idee how many gigs I can grab, approx 100?

My download speed never goes past 45kb and taking 1mbps / 8 = 125kb which I will never reach.

How quick does these servers run? On torrents I normally get +- 35kb.

yeah, it really depends on your usage patterns - if you're gonna cap it up all month long then the monthly is the way to go. If you just want available whenever then the prepaid works better for me.

I dunno, I last picked up the 100 odd Gb, it was a couple of months ago - iburst aint the speediest pony on the racetrack.

Well if it is more than USD11 for the 100g it is not really worthwile either.

I think the point about the 100gb is that you only pay once off ie. no monthly payment, and it lasts until you've used it. Nice if you know you only going to download a small amount of gb per month

Well it all depend on the price of the 100GB.

If it is USD20 I would rather fork out the 11usd as I will definately use 65-70gig per month. I would think that guys with, say a 10g monthly adsl cap would benefit from this as they can use it at the end of the month.

Still I can navigate their site to that page, any links?

They have one package, 180gigs for USD25. This seem reasonable, especially with eskom threatening us(only to drive their increases) with power cuts. I might get more value out of this package. If it last me 3 months I can still download 60gig per month = 25USD / 3 =8.3USD

Ja, that was what I was gonna suggest. That way will work out cheaper for you and you know you can just use it anytime and it will not expire. You will not be pressured to just use it for no reason, but you can feel free to grab the stuff you really need.

Gary please help. I subscribed but don't know how to get any binary files downloaded or even search for them.

Do I search via Astraweb or should I use grab it? DO I need to subscribe to grab-it too?

Downloading Stuff from the Usenet (International Bandwidth)

There is another way to download lots of cool stuff faster... using the UseNet... I like this way because it is MUCH faster than Torrents...

1) You need a UseNet Account. You can get a free one from Giganews.... (lasts three days.. enough to download some cool stuff... just make sure to cancel if you don't want to pay). The paid accounts are also quite reasonable.

http://www.giganews.com/

You can also get very cheap monthly accounts from Astraweb....

http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html

Or NewsDemon....

http://www.newsdemon.com/discount-usenet.php

2) Then you will need this program... (Grabit)... from here...

http://www.shemes.com/

Install it and open it up... load the account information you got from Giganews (Username and Password) into the server settings.

3) Then go here to search for what you want to download.... It's free, you just have to sign up.

http://www.merlins-portal.net/

Download the files you want and unzip them. They will give an NZB file. Double click the NZB file and it will load into Grabit and start downloading.

4) When it is finished downloading Grabit will try to extract the RAR file to your My Documents/Grabit Folder. Go look there.

5) If it extracted as an AVI file (or whatever), then you are finished.

6) If you still see a bunch of RAR files, then use this program to Unzip them....

http://www.philipp-winterberg.com/software/rarzilla_free_unrar.php

7) If the file got corrupted (won't extract)... then use this program (Quickpar) ...

http://www.quickpar.org.uk/

It will take those PAR2 files that came down also... and will repair the archive... BTW, you don't always have to download all the PAR2 files. Only download them if you need them. (you can deleted them from your download list by selecting them and pressing DEL).

Then you can extract it.

More instructions here...

If you are looking for more episodes or movies to download you can get them from here (where to get the NZB files)...

http://www.google.co.za/search?q=nz...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

.. there are lots of other usenet providers also.... you can get free trials from a lot of them...
