Morning guys, i'm new here.

I have a problem. I'm trying to connect to a pc via VPN.
The host pc has a dedicated ADSL Line with a telkom router
(Mega 105WR)

I've registered with DYNDNS and configured the host router.

When i connect to the host, it connects to the domain and says "Verifying
username & password" it stays there for about 10 secs and gives me an "Error 721 the remote computer did not respond".

In the event viewer on the host computer, under system, i got the following
warning

" The user connected to port VPN4-1 has been disconnected because the authentication process did not complete within the required amount of time "

Any idea as to how i would sort this problem out to connect successfully ???

Many thanks in advance ... :)

What OS is the PC you are trying to VPN to running? Is it part of an AD network? Is there a firewall?

Hi, both PC OS's are WinXP SP3.

Only the remote computer is part of an AD Network, however the DC on the network is not connected to the internet. The remote computer is configured with a static ip addr and the ADSL MODEM internal IP addr is set as the gateway.

Th host machine is a standalone with the router connected directly to the pc via lan cable. The LAN PORT has a default windows firewall with default settings.

The standard firewall would block the connection i think, u need to add the ports to the exception list (open the ports)..

or try using himachi

If you use RAS or ISA these, together with the authentication server, would need to be properly configured to allow VPN. You would need to speak with your network administrator to organise this.

I am also having a problem connecting through a vpn connection. The client has a dedicated static IP DSL line. I am trying to connect to the machine and it gives me the following error "TCP/IP CP reported error 31: A device attached to the system is not functioning." Anybody have an Idea why i am getting this error and what the soultion could be?

In my experience, it usually port and authentication problems that cause the most problems. First off, you need to make sure authentication works, test it from inside the host network! Secondly you need to make sure you can access the authentication server from outside on TCP port 1723. Protocol 47 is used with PPTP(Standard MS vpn).
