I have a 1996 VW Jetta 1.8 CSX Carburettor.

It has recently been for a major service, new brakes & clutch cable.

Since I got the car back, I've got 2 problems:

1. The car is VERY heavy on petrol. Why?

2. I see in my driveway there are oil spots on the paving (under the engine) but I check the oil level every day and it is
fine. What can be wrong?

Please help. Your input will be much appreciated.

There is no reason why the car should be heavy on petrol after a service, question is was the service actually done? if the possibility of a petrol leak is excluded then I would advice you to check the spark plugs as well as the carburettor settings, I have heard that if they aren't set up correctly you might experience heavy consumption.

Another thing to check on is one of those vacuum pipes, maybe one has come loose.

I had a year older similar one once upon a time time..

There are 2 seperate oil seals.
To get to the one the have to take out the carb or some such(cannot quite remember what item, but was taken out through open bonnet). The part was dirt cheap the labour a lot. The mechanic knew about it but did say it was very labour intensive.
And he actually called me to come see. When I got there he pointed out the 2.
Both seals were changed and it did not leak up until the car was in an accident and then written off.
Only the "easy"seal was replaced after that when servicing. Probably about 4 years.

The guys could have made some adjustments to your carburettor so as to make the car run "richer" which will consume more fuel.
Your new oil filter may not have been tightened enough, causing a little bit of oil to leak from it.
