Picked up the modem this evening just before the outlets closed. Only modem in stock is the Mega 200VWR.

I am attempting the self install right now, and have run into some trouble...

It has passed the diagnostics tests ... ALL OK.

Next step is the verify service, once I press the "Verify ADSL Service" button, IE is supposed to open up the telkom website - but what is actually happening is : IE wants to dial out on my 56K dial up account, and it cannot connect - says no dial tone - because their is no line connected to the modem at the moment - I am using this line to connect to the router power supply!

What do I do? Is it supposed to use the 56K modem to verify the ADSL service?

Have been on hold at the SIO helpline for about 20 minutes now.

Anybody can help me with this please?

In IE, click tools>internet options>connections> choose never dial a connection.

Now try to verify again, if that doesn't work, just delete the dialup connection ;)

Mega 200 error 4002

Thank you teraside. Deleting the dialup accounts and changing to "never dial a connection" did the trick.

I spent just over an hour with telkom support and we never got that far. Only after he conceded defeat and logged a fault did I come back to read your help.

However, I have run into another problem with the Mega 200 - During the easy setup wizard phase - diagnostics all check out and then the verification is successful. But the next step fails.

I ran the diagnostic test of the router and it fails the bit where it tests he internet connection via the router.

It gives a number to call and report with the error code 4002. Anybody know what to do?

Okay, make sure you've set up your ISP username and password.

Leave the router on for about 15 minutes, switch it off after that for about 5 minutes and switch it back on. Verification takes a while to complete I think, it's not instant.

Teraside - the verification went off successfully about an hour ago - the text file left on the desktop confirms that.

When was I supposed to get the ISP details for the Do 2 package? At the telkom shop they said they their connections were down the whole day and that I could easily get it by dialing 10215.

The guy at 10215 says he has no record of my "activation" and that I should wait for a fax from them tomorrow giving me my username and password!

So far all I can do is browse the telkom website (with guest@telkomadsl / guest as username / password) - so I presume my adsl is set up correctly - Am I correct?

All i need is an isp account and it will work OK? perhaps I should try a local account or an Axess prepaid voucher?

The wait t get onto ADSL has been frustrating, and now that I have the self install package that I am trying to install - this lengthy process is even more frustrating and I'm already beginning to question whether its worth it :(

lol dude, it's worth it ;)

An Axxess prepaid voucher would work perfect. You need to know these things before you do it, you won't be able to browse if you don't have ISP details, that's like asking telscum for a freebie, and that never happens ;) :p :D

Hope you get it sorted

Teraside,

Once I'd realised that I had not been following ALL the steps in this self install, I was able to sort things out.

I had missed the very first line in the guide that says you must call the isp during office hours. Could have been misled by the staff at the telkom store who said that I could do it once I got home (when it was after 5PM already)!

Well, I got webafrica to come to the rescure, with a 1G local account that was instantly activated and was able to complete the installation last night.

All I got to do now is sort out the Telkom ISP details and will be done.

I must just figure out which settings / passwords I should change to secure the pc and bandwidth accounts.

Passwords:

Change the default router password (always do this, it's non negotiable), as you router could get hacked quite easily, also make sure your router "firewall" is enabled, this should be your first defense against hackers etc.

Go to telkomsa.net after you've received the ISP details, click the password tool and change the passwords there after logging in with your default username and password.

That's it ;)

Email:

Small tip, avoid yourself some serious issues for the future, don't use a telscum email address. Rather get www.gmail.com

If you're using the wireless functionality, you should enable WAP encryption with a decent passkey. If not, deactivate the wireless functionality (for obvious reasons)...

You can't change your account username or password afaik, but I've never heard of someone being able to retrieve that.

[EDIT: Apparently you can change your account password, so go ahead and do that as well. The assistant I spoke to on 0800 500 200 changed the password to one of my choice, but I should probably change it again...]

and use a decent password, not something like your girlfriends name. It will be hacked in seconds. Also a password like p@ssw0rd or something similar where you replace 3's for E's is not strong. All the current password guessing programs cater for this.
