Hi all,

My ADSL 384kbps line is up and down all day. Not loosing sync, but loss of auth?

What is this LCP Down stuff and who do I call to fix it? I have had numerous calls open with telkom and not one has totally resolved my problems.

See log file, this is a small small one! Thanks, RT

i had the same problem last week. updating the drivers on my router solved the problem

Actually I've had the same problem (still have it to be honest!). For me it was my line. First I lost all voice - IE couldn't make calls from the phone - and then these disconnects started.

Waiting for telkom to phone me back. This might take a while :p

Interesting, going to get latest firmware and give it a bash, I have a netgear DG834Gv3 I see there is new firmware as of 10 Jan 2007.

Brenden E, were you able to send the logs to anyone at Telkom?

Nope - there's clearly something off with my line (not just the ADSL), so I didn't bother to send them the ADSL logs. FOr instance last night my ADSL died completely and I couldn't connect at all. After reading around for a while, it appears quite a few people are experiencing this.

What's telkom doing this time?

Yeah it does seem quite broad alright, I lost connection at abou 00:15 and it was on and off as you can see all night...

FIRMWARE now updated, lets see what happens with the LCP?

WHAT IS LCP ANYWAY?!

Synching and disconnects

I have been experiencing this since Saturday. I was particularly bad last night. It hasn't happened since 14:10.

I wonder if it is not something to do with the temperatures we have been experiencing?

Well did a router firmware upgrade, and it was all cool until 14h18 when it started its **** again... I am at a loss now... I have called Telkom about this before and I just dont know where to turn now...

Well the telkom cable guy has come over, plugged in his laptop and a bomb-proof telkom test modem, and low and behold it all works for them.

Not minutes before my netgear Dg834Gv3 was up and down like a yo yo, my modem has been solid since he left too, going on 30 mins now... which is a record for the past few days...

What I want to know is if any of you have ever had an expert call you regarding ADSL issues, I am really looking for someone more than the guy who can tell me "the line is fine" its clearly not, there is something at fault and I need good advice, if its my modem then I conceed that, but right now I dont think so...

Any advice on getting expert assistance on a telkom call?

ravetoad .. its about time you realize that there are NO EXPERTS at Telkom.

Persistent problems

Randburg
requested connect speed 3072 on an alleged 4096 line to reduce problems
Persistent loss of synchronization
Persistent drop of LCP
Download speeds of ±1Mbps

This is the 4096 ADSL!!

Okay, now that link may be an avenue to explore, thanks.

I have pasted the text here so that future searchers may find an oasis amongst all the BS..

Advantages: Very Relaible
Disadvantages: Drops out if your ADSL has a low SNR ratio

Recommend to potential buyers: yes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the record i am a technical person so for me some of what i needed to do wasnt all that much of a chore but i hope this all helps you with your purchase.

I have BT Broadband and i live close enough to my local exchange to get a the 1mbit service.

I previously connected with a BT Voyager router and had no problems, so one day i decide to go wireless and put my faith in a trusted brand such as netgear.

Once i received the router i unpacked it and hooked it up to my broadband, with only a few clicks i was up and running with a basic working setup.

for those who need a littel more out of this that a basic setup this device also includes the following combined features, ADSL modem/router, 4 port 10/100mb switch, wireless access point, dual NAT and SPI firewall. This device might not be the best in its class but it is excelent value for money for being feature rich.

Wireless is secured with WEP, WPA and you can also enable MAC address filtering so that only autherised network devices can fully connect.

*NOTE*
Be sure to change the admin password as information like that is public knowledge on the likes of www.portforward.com should anyone manage to connect to it from both inside or outside your home network they will no doubt play around.

However my ADSL link would occationaly drop off with the router log showing "LCP Down" and "Waiting for LCP to come up" in an endless loop. So i upgraded from the basic firmware 1.01.00 to the latest on their site 1.02.04

this fixed the problem only patially in that i stayed connected longer but still had dropouts.

So now i was looking into this more and realised that when i monitored my router status i found my signal to noise ratio would drop down to negative numbers when i was getting drop offs, so i used a few methods to improve this in my property by making a few chages to my internal phone wires (dont try this at home unless you know what your doing)

The result was an increase in my signal to noise ratio of over 3db.

This improved things more but still the occational drop, so i called BT and informed them of all my work, after getting passed to various people i got an engineer to talk to, they offered to increase the gain on my line to maximum, after that was done all has been fine. I now have my pc, laptop and my xbox running through this router flawlessly and fully secured.

hope this helps any potential buyers, basicly this unit is great but needs a firmware upgrade and good ADSL Line to run on.

** Update Note **

I am now using this router on BT's Broadband max technology, i am fortunate enouhg to get around 4.5 - 5mbs downstream.

During the 10 day training period i only encountered 1 drop off while i was connected. since then this router has not missed a beat and works flawlessly with the new broadband technology. to thumbs up for netgear.

Thanks for a really informative response.

There has to be, I think all that one needs is patience and follow procedure and you will find them...

I have had the same problem since last week Saturday night. Also lost my voice last month for about 10 days. I loose connection about 30-40 times per day yet the modem/router is still in sync with the DSLAM. Sometimes it can't connect again for up to 45 minutes. I don't have a Netgear router so thats not my problem.

As with Ravetoad, Telkom guy came around and had no problems. The line worked for about 3 hours afterwards and then went down again. He said that he asked them to reset something at the DSLAM.

I am connected to the Sunninghill exchange if that is the same as anyone else. This is really annoying. If the idiots had come around about an hour ago, they would have found the problem for sure.

Telkom person on the phone told me this morning that there are about 600 people connected to the Sunninghill exchange with problems. So the problem has to be with the line.

I tried my moms Billion, does not work when the problem occurs. I also tried using the Telkom guest account. That does not work either.

This just indicates that the problem is a line problem and not modem/account.

On a side note, the problem is so bad in the last hour that it has only been up for brief stints of about 2 minutes at a time so hopefully Telskum will get to the bottom of the problem. I have also had my issue bumped up to a higher level of support.

Consult the oracles

The people at 0800375375, when eventually the phone gets answered, will be able to give you solace nowhere beyond where you were before you called.

One can only question Telkom's structure as far as customer service is concerned - it is designed to avoid the people responsible for anything being disturbed by having to actually assist a customer.

Please post anything to the contrary - it will be a relief to know that something, nay, anything, happens to give any customer service.

Let's have some positive good news for a change.

My problem now seems to be sorted. Telkom escalated the problem to the "senior" techs yesterday after I bitched like crazy. Got a call from them last night saying that there is a problem at the exchange and the guys are working on it. Telephone line went down for about an hour. It has been up since the line came back on.
