Hi all, i am busy contemplating setting up a wifi network at the complex i live in of about 35 units and was wandering how i should go about doing it and what equipment i should use and general help. The main purpose is to offer a shared network for all to access each others shares and later develop it into a interent share for all the users in the complex. All the flats are on the same level so LOS will not help, also how well do access points distrubute signal through walls and windows?? Any help will be well appreciated, sorry for poor spelling and bad grammer.

AmonRe - you in Cape Town right?

check out http://www.ctwug.za.net that just launched there site this week so there is not much content but maybe you can get some help from one of the guys otherwise visit http://www.jawug.za.net.
maybe join the jawug or dwc irc channels for more "direct" help
maybe once you have setup the complex's wireless network you can like it to another network closeby... slowly, slowly growing the "mesh" in CT or whatever area you in.

Yeah i am in ct, thanks will have a look at the sites i am a registered user on ctwug and not much info at the moment. But post again if no further luck. Thanxs

Dude, if you ARE aware of your poor spelling and "grammer" (which, FWIW, is -miles- ahead of some of the others round these parts, congrats on that much at least), why not make the effort to get it right.. you (have to!) know it's the better way to go!

And it's not like there's a shortage of tools to help you with this either: I've just read that AbiWord (free, at http://www.abisource.com/) has spelling AND grammar check AND it's a small download to boot! Then there's WhiteSmoke (NOT free, at http://www.whitesmoke.com/), which I stumbled across recently. Feel free to amuse/educate yourself with this elGoog search: http://tinyurl.com/97qmy (too long and messy to post the actual search URL).

..that said, good luck with that project! ..mostly with getting 35 units of people interested enough to spend money in your direction! :D

Walls will definitely have a negative impact on your setup. Try to find a place outside the complex (perhaps the security house) which have LOS to the window side of the clients where you can install your AP. Where in CT, perhaps I can go take a look at the complex and give you some advice.
