Hey, i have a huge problem with my windows installation..

I cant boot up anymore, i get a blue screen telling me there has been a REGISTRY ERROR, it then reboots. It makes no difference when trying the 'Last good configuration' boot option, or safe mode.

I have tried to re-install over the last installation but it gives me the same error when the setup tries to access the old install, the same occures with the recovery console..

It seemed to happen after eskom killed my power yesterday to do work on my street's power lines. When i got power back, the machine was fscked...

My hardware is fine, cuz i'm writing this from the same machine, but booted into ubuntu linux.. Formatting is NOT an option, i have over 200GB worth of stuff that i need on the drive, which i can still access thru linux, but cant affod to lose.. Does anyone know of a way to fix the registry either from another machine with my hdd plugged in, or thru my linux install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks in advance

pB

Almost had a similar problem a while ago - got hold of RegistryFix - small app but very powerful!
Had no problems from there on.

ummm but you have to be in windows to use that dont you

post this in the hardware thread

do a fresh install

when it asks format make sure you select keep current file system in tact

so all your doing is deleting the windows folder
all your data will still be there all you must do is reload all your proggies

thanks, i'll give it a shot.. the windows install always gave my ****, but i'll try again.. or i'll see if RegistryFix works from anothe machine with my hdd in it..

If you are able to get into Safe Mode - the prog will run, otherwise - try Killadoob's way.

yup good advice :)

but what i find wierd is that repairing didnt help
means a serious problem goin there lol

yea safe mode basicly told me to go an fsck myself, so i'll try another install.. it was prob doing something important when eskom killed my power..

anyway, i'll let u know how it goes..

Thanks for all the really fast reply's:)

ok, well the setup gave me the same ****. I press F8 to agree with the lic agreement, and it dies with the REGISTRY_ERROR blue screen:( I'm gonna try my luck with the other machine and my hdd plugged in...

You don't have to reformat to re-install Windows for god's sake!
Boot from a boot disk, delete the window or winnt directory (make sure you have copied everything from your DESKTOP to be safe) and then boot from the windoze CD to reinstall.

EDIT: what killadoob said. :D

ummm if its telling you from f8 that there is a problem

something else is wrong
hdd currupt
or something along those lines

because when you press f8 it has nothing to with your windows, which means it hasnt even tried to see if you have windows

i would put that hdd on another machine
defrag and run checkdisk on it

Pity you tried the reinstall. There's a way of booting off the XP CD, going into the recovery console, and recovering the registry from the system restore folders. Done it a few times on corrupted registries (bad motherboard once).

u guys dont understand something i doubt this problem has anything to with windows

or he wouldnt get the error message when he presses f8

once youve pressed f8 it doesnt check your system for windows at all which means it aint a windows problem

my 2 cents

"Registry error" sounds a lot like Windows to me. And F8 brings up the WINDOWS boot options screen...

so when you press f8 and its loads those 2-3 options its looking at your registry?

why would it be doing that?

Not the registry at that point - but choose an option, and it chooses set of registry files.

woooo, firstly thanks for all of the reply's.. but i just wanna clarify things a bit...

The OS did start booting and only just before it would normally go into the shell would it die.

The 'pressing F8' that i was talking about is not the one you all are talking about, pressing F8 at boot DID work, and gave me the normal list of options like safe mode, etc, the F8 i was speaking of, is in the WINDOWS SETUP, after booting the win xp cd. It gives you the licence aggreement and ask's you to press F8 to accept. This is just before it ask's which partition you want to install windows onto, this is where it would die with the same REGISTRY_ERROR as when trying to boot but in the setup..

It never let me get any further than that and so it never reinstalled windows. I did try the recovery console claymore, and when i selected my windows install it died with the same error..

Anyway, i did put my hdd into my other comp and copied everything i wanted to keep into a folder on the disk, and just deleted the WINDOWS, Program Files an Documents And Settings folders. I then booted off the win xp cd again, and when i agreed to the lic aggreement it allowed me to select a partition, and as i write this, its installing windows again, and i was able to keep all the stuff i wanted, the prob should be sorted now with a new win installation:D

thanks again to everyone who posted reply's, it is greatly appreciated. This fourm ROCKS!!!!

oh, just one more thing, does ayone know how to re-install GRUB so that i can boot into Ubuntu again after windows has modified my MBR during setup...

THANKS AGAIN!!!
