I recently bought a Canon 700D.

I am not sure if the behaviour of the camera is normal, or if I don’t understand how to use it correctly, probably the latter.

I put the camera on and switch on live view, I put it on auto mode (A+). While looking at the screen I notice the mode in the top left corner changes from A+ to different modes, at the same time the lens is constantly refocusing itself automatically. Is this the correct behaviour?

When I use the eye piece instead of live view I don’t have the constant refocusing (of course I cannot see if the mode is changing).

Please help.

It sounds as if the camera is set to a continuous autofocus mode. According to DPReview's menu description, there is a "Live View" tab under settings with a setting called "Continuous AF". Disabling this should stop the refocussing, if that is the problem here.

I have no idea why the exposure mode indicator (top left corner) changes, but I have never handled a 700D body, so maybe someone else can answer that part.

Thanks, i will check out the options for the Live View settings. I hope this will help.

Ecco - this is " the Computer does not work " sort of problem. Just go to the basics , and reset all to Factory Default on the camera. Load the software that you got with the kit on your PC as well and explore what you can achieve. Even start with the dreaded Green Button setting and go from there . Canon has some very useful tutorials on the web , yet try and hook up with some 'togs in your area and ask for a go-along to some photoshoot about subjects that might interest you.

Well auto mode is used to allow the camera to select the scene mode for you? So what you are seeing is that the camera is not actually sure what scene to use since it's constantly changing. Live view would make the lens refocus depending on where your focus point is set ( which could be determined by the scene selected )

Thats my thought on it... never used Auto mode though.

I have watched a few videos and read some tutorials on how to use the manual settings. I am a lot more comfortable using Manual, Aperture priority and Shutter priority modes.

I was just concerned there was something wrong with camera, as the Auto Mode when using Live view and the experience using the eye piece was completely different.

I wanted to make sure nothing was wrong with the camera.

Try with live view in manual mode. Also set your Af points to 1 centre so the camera doesn't try focus elsewhere and see if it repeats
