Hi All,

Yesterday I got telkom to upgraded my line from 2Mbps to 4Mbps. I did all the modem reboots etc and this is what my line is syncing at currently – which does not look right :(

Line rate upstream 512 Kbps
Line rate downstream 3136 Kbps

Anybody able to help diagnose if there is an issue – or what I should be telling Telkom to assist?

Appreciate any help.

Thanks

No, my ISP is afrihost - I have a 50gb capped account with them.

They need to upgrade your account to 4mb as well. If they dont flip the switch on their side, you wont get the correct speeds.

Err capped goes as fast as line speed...

Need your line stats please OP, loo9ks like the Telkom system is limiting your line cos the stats are crap.

Yeah its a capped account, didnt think i needed to inform my ISP of anything.

What stats do you require - and how do i get them (sorry, a bit technically challenged when it comes to these line stats, pings, trace routes etc)?

No you don't on a capped account. Log into your router and look around, need SNR and Attenuation values. Might be under "advanced" somewhere

Crap - loadshedding just started - will have to give you guys these details later

Power is back - below the line stats requested

Any advise?

Line is ****ing awful, even at 3meg you're going to get instability. Fastest stable speed you'll get on that is probably 2meg

You're too far from the exchange.

or you have a crappy line. You could complain about noise on your line. That usually works instead of complaining about an ADSL issue.

if that doesn't work you're stuck on 3Meg.

This is sad :(

I also have an issue where my line disconnects when the phone rings, despite having new d-link filters (at least thats what they sold me at the telkom shop).

Is that related the quality of this line?

Your downstream SNR is extremely low. Anything below 6 will be an unstable line.
Do you know how far you are from your exchange?

I have no idea - how would I find out?

Definitely a symptom of a bad line but it could also be distance from the exchange.

Get a dial tone on your phone and hit 0, if you hear a sound of frying eggs or similar report a noisy line.

I have reported faults for the line dropping when the phone rings, for the noisy line etc - doesnt seem like the guys check anything or fix anything :(

I'm guessing that you haven't had a technician on-site yet given that the upgrade was only performed yesterday.

If you can't be there when they pitch make sure you leave a note in respect of the the line dropping when answering an incoming call as this can indicate a bad joint somewhere.

I haven't logged these faults again. I had already logged faults to the same effect about 3 weeks ago when my line went down.

The line was restored but the connection dropping issue still persists, and quite evidently the noise issue.
