Hi

Wondering if anyone could help me understand this

Got an ADSL line with capped account

No fibre for some years to come
No LTE Coverage for Telkom, Cell C

Only other option is WISP, I’d like to keep that for the very last option

Previously had a 4mb line, only got speeds of 2mb

Now have an 8mb line, only get speeds of 4mb

Telkom says I can get upto 10mb line

All testing done through lan, testing done at off peak only , peak is less

ISP and line rental through Afrihost

Technicians have been out and say it’s sorted but nothing changes

Could someone help me understand this ? Is this normal ?

It's not normal. But unfortunately it is also not something that one can claim is the ISP's fault. The reason is, ADSL is "best effort" and the speeds advertised are not guaranteed, they are "up to" that speed.

There are many factors that effect your speed, some stuff that Telkom can do, but you would be lucky to find a technician that is actually going to go the extra mile and sort it out cradle-to-grave.

Sorry. You'll just have to wait for Fibre, I'm in the same boat fibre-wise. Will have to wait for years.

I’m just confused , with an 8mb line I can get 4mb speed , but with 4mb I can’t get 4mb

I used to have ADSL and had a similar problem. My ISP, Mweb, forced Telkom to fix the line to my satisfaction and it worked well thereafter until fibre was installed at my house.

Thanks, I need to put pressure onto Afrihost to put pressure onto Telkom

I think I’m highly experienced with getting Afrihost to sort out my issues might just take six months like the last one

You can see on your router diagnostics what the maximum capable speed of your DSL line is...just below that is your throttled speed, usually.

"I’m just confused , with an 8mb line I can get 4mb speed , but with 4mb I can’t get 4mb"

Glad I'm not the only one who has experienced this - but get them to sort it out...you're paying for 8Mbps not 4Mbps, you know now you can get 4Mbps constant on the line and infrastructure, when you pay for 8Mbps...so dont take any excuses to the contrary if you revert back again to 4Mbps.

Thanks will work on it

guys with no dsl added onto the line in the area are being moved to FLLA (wireless landline) so i guess Telkom will have a good excuse for that

What are your line stats?
Have you tried using a competitor's capped account to make sure it's not Afrihost?

You should be getting 80-85% of down sync speed as your download after overheads.

When I read this kind of response regarding SA ISPs, I just wonder why we can't expect 100% or better for the money we pay, instead of less?

No offense...its just that we celebrate mediocre service in SA, and are OK with it.

That said - if you can't get DSL to work as it should - try RAIN (4G-LTE) it actually works out cheaper than DSL. You can now get unlimited data during working hours - for R250 - no installation cost, no land line rental fees...all you need is 4G reception.

It's normal all over the world to get "up to" on adsl.
You are getting your full e.g.4Mbps, just that parts of the connection are used for the transportation of packets.

On fiber they usually allow you to burst/go slightly over, that's why we can get 99Mbps on 100Mbps as we're actually bursting to ~110Mbps, while fiber also has less overheads.

If you on fibre - you will see the same wording in your offer... "up to" (Openserve etc) - there is no such thing as fibre in SA, offering any better than the "best effort", but 80% on DSL isn't really best effort, it means they are cashing in on 20% of you cost every month...nice windfall.

We should not celebrate mediocrity in the industry.

I am currently using a 100Mbps fiber connection to send this message with while being in Cape Town, South Africa...

That's the technology, you are getting 100% of your sync, they're not cheating you on that. It's your expectation versus what the actual product is.
