I bought myself an afrihost account today. We have an existing telkom account, that account is for the whole family, and is set into the router, so i cant put my afrihost in there. I went and created a new dial up connection for myself, so that i can use the afrihost account. Everything works fine when i log in etc, but then every2 mins or so the connection drops and has to redial.

Iv changed internet settings etc to force the connection to not drop if idle and all that sort of thing but the problem still continues.

this account is mainly for gaming and so on so if its going to keep on dropping there is no real point in me keeping it.

Is there a way to fix this problem or should i go ahead and cancel this account ?

Any input will be much appreciated, thanks guys

Well that ain't right, test by using the telkom router account ( dialed on your pc ) as well as on the router and see if it drops

you cant i have 2 connections active on one line as far as i know, whats proberly happening is your router is connecting and disconnecting you

You know wrong

It is possible, used to use Telkom for News servers when capped and Afrihost for international.

I had to set my router to bridged mode to do this.

What router do you have? Model?

Your modem will have to be switched to bridging mode.

Every user will then have to use their own separate dialup accounts, so you can't have one active account on the modem and then other dialup accounts at the same time.

But this is only afaik: I have never done this myself.

Wrong ;) Look up PPPoE Passthrough aka Half-bridge

Good to know :-)

Though still don't think my modem will support it ... has been the main reason I didn't go bridging mode -- didn't want to support the rest of the users on the network when they go: "the internet is broken again ..."

Some routers allow both routing and bridging to take place simultaneously. You would need to check your router's documentation or give details of the router here.

Most ok routers support it,say anything that cost more than R500 in the last 5 years :) Netgear, some Billion,Dlink,Linksys etc

I have a Dlink 2500U which costs about R250 and it can do it.

I had an issue where enabling half-bridge wiped all the NAT settings on that model specifically which is why i'm writing it up to "not doing it well" column :P

My old beige Telkom router used to have one account set and up to 3 other PCs connected used to pppoe over it at the same time, with default settings

Then you were probably using old firmware. I've had a couple of issues (that I can't remember what they were) with my DSL-2500U, but now it is working 100% in half-bridge mode. For under R300 it is definitely the best ADSL2+ modem that I know of! It's ADSL features & stability even supersedes most of the expensive (R1000+) ADSL modems' !

Fonzy, what router do you have?

My router is NETGEAR DG834G

I know the router can do it, because my brother used to do it on our router.

But im not sure how he got it right.

sorry for double post, but i have more info in this situation now :D

It seems that i only dc when im browsing sites.

If i use my afrihost con while hosting a dota game or something like that, my con doesnt drop.
But as soon as i open up internet explorer and start browsing i constantly get dc'd.

It makes no sense to me, any1 care to shed some light on the matter ?
