Hi all,

As the title states, I am looking for some help with routing all Web Traffic through my HP N40L.
From what I do know, I need another Gigabit PCI card and the easiest way to get this done is with Ubuntu.

I'm hoping someone can suggest a Windows alternative, as I remote desktop a lot and never managed to get that functionality working with Ubuntu.

Your help would be appreciated :)

Edit : I am aware the title wasn't idiot proof :(. PM'd a mod already.

IF you are going to use it for media storage, have a look at trying out xpenology http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6&start=30

It is based on the Synology devices and it uses the official Synology software. It has all the features of a Synology boxes as far as I am aware, ie web server, media server, ftp server etc

Looking into it. Though about my list of "requirements" :

1. Manage and track the bandwidth used from specific IP addresses.
2. Download and cache the Windows Updates so I don't download them for 7 different PC's.
3. Plex Server and Storage House. Will upgrade system if it can't do all this.

Seeing your requirements now, this is what I use at some of my corporate clients :-

Your point 1 : - Sophos UTM (Formerly Astaro) - I get mailed on a daily basis bandwith reports - This is a dedicated firewall solution so does not address your points 2 & 3.

Great for managing users bandwidth in a corporate environment. I have previously used Smoothwall Express and Untangle.

These are all firewall only options though.

Your point 2 : I use Win Portable Update with stores Windows Updates. I carry this with me on a flash drive which I use to update client machines (currently about 8Gb now) .

There is also WSUS Offline Update which I have not used but colleagues swear by it.

Your point 3 : I use XPenology.

Afraid not a single solution but maybe these suggestions can assist you in making your choices.

My advice, keep your firewall and your media server separate...

1.) PFsense and Squid (add Lightsquid for reporting) will do this in conjunction with NTOP + Darkstat + BandwidthD
2.) You can cache Windows updates via Squid - just set the file cache size to a big amount etc.
3.) See my advice.

IF you are adamanet that it be one server then:

1.) Ubuntu + Squid
2.) You can cache Windows updates via Squid - just set the file cache size to a big amount etc.
3.) Plex + Samba for file shares.

As for QOS on a normal Linux box - I wouldn't bother. Firewall distro's are far better suited to this and in particular PFSense is probably the best firewall distro as BSD handle's this type of task better than Linux does.

Remote desktop = Use VNC like TightVNC or some such.
