Hi guys!

Got my apple tv today. However, it needs a jailbreak before I can really use it.

Got it with 4.0 installed. Can only save shsh blobs for 4.2, so a pwnagetool jailbreak is out of the question. I tried jailbreaking with limerain and greenpoison, which both claimed to be 'successful' but I can't access it on SSH! Does neither of these tools install ssh?

I bought a 2 year subscription to aTV Flash, but can't get it installed now. Please help!!!

Have you tried the following yet to JB:

Yea, problem is, I got it on 4.0, I can only save shsh blobs for 4.2, so there is no way I can install any other fw version. If I somehow screw the current install, I will be forced to upgrade to 4.2
The only way would be if I can somehow install ssh on the device

Those are for the old apple tv. The new one does not have a USB to connect a patchstick, only a microUSB port used to perform uodates (probably for restoring when you are unable to access it over the network
I've managed to get it jailbroken, just need to be able to SSH into it! Else the JB is worhless. :(

Are you running the JB from a Mac?
Most of the failure reports point to problems on windows and Mac's running older OSX versions. For example:
http://modmyi.com/forums/appletv/733898-any-sucsess-jailbreaking-you-apple-tv-2g.html

http://modmyi.com/forums/appletv/734340-appletv-2g-jailbreak-guide-1600-21-1611-errors.html

Also it appears you might need to upgrade to 4.1 - check the modmyi forums for answers.

Yes, I am running it from a Mac, tried windows and OSX, windows is completely up to date, OSX has an update I need to install (Never boot into OSX at work, data is expensive at home. :) )

2 problems i face:
1. I bought aTV Flash which only runs on 4.0 at the moment (4.1 coming soon, which is good)
2. Itunes will only allow me to update to 4.2. I only got it yesterday, so I could only save my SHSH blobs for 4.2

So the only possible way would be to perform an 'on device jailbreak' and install SSH. I have built a custom IPSW on 4.0, which includes SSH, there is just no way to install it since apple has stopped signing 4.0. I can go up to 4.2, which will be tethered, and I have to wait even longer for aTV support!

Sell me your AppleTV, i just want it to stream music from a desktop... PLEASE :)

Can't do bud, first and foremost (except for the fact that I want it), it was my bday present from the wife (which came about 3 weeks early)
Secondly, I have already spent $30 in software for it as well (which I cant use at the moment)

I am using it to replace my MVix PVR in the main bedroom... just need to get it working properly first!!! :)

OK I think I can conclude the following:

Firstly, Apple screwed up the version numbers on the Apple TV. There has only been 2 FW versions released. Apple 'markets' them in iTunes as 4.1 and 4.2 (as they coincided with those releases of iOS on iPhone/pod/pad)
On device, the version numbers are 4.0 and 4.1

4.0 is jailbroken (but I cannot install it as I have no SHSH blobs saved)
4.1 is jailbreakable, but tethered, which is quite a mission. Not worth it for me at this point.

So for anyone else that's in the same boat as me, the only possible way is to wait until they have found a way to have an untethered jailbreak for 4.2 (that is now if you want to have a proper jailbreak to install 3rd party apps like aTV Flash/Plex/etc

@comex is our friend here, just hope he gets this untethered JB right in good time! There seems to be very little mention of anything regarding that!

I take it you posted your question on the modmyi forum - was this their answer?

I recommend you keep an eye on the modmyi forums, generally the first place to know when new JBs are released. There have been rumors that Apple might release iOS 4.3 and comex might be waiting to see if this is true (I.e. By holding back he can avoid letting Apple have a chance to patch another jb method)

No, I just did a LOT of research myself on all the issues I had, and facts on hand.
I do not relaly read the modmyi forum, iclarified is usually my apple site of choice. Will keep an eye on modmyi though, thanks!

From the attached youtube videos it appears it's possible to save your SHSH using CYDIA as opposed to Apple. Hopefully these vids help.

These are of no use really. I need to have Cydia on the device, which is not possible at this point.
Secondly, like I mentioned earlier, Apple stopped signing the 4.0 firmware, I can only sign the latest which I have done even before I connected the aTV to my computer.
Basically, like mentioned in my previous post, there is nothing I can do but wait.

I wouldn't give up just yet, cydia is only installed on atv after the JB; the cydia referred here is the cydia servers, not the iOS app. Saurik (cydia developer) has for quite a while provided stand in signing of iOS versions that Apple no longer supports. Try it you never know it might just work.

Thanks, I will have a look at it (cannot access youtube at work)

The reason I doubt it will work, is the following. I might be wrong in my statements, but this is how I see it:
Cydia never did any actual 'signing'. I basically asked apple to sign your firmware, and the SHSH blobs that apple returns, are now stored on the cydia servers. Thus, the moment apple stops signing a specific firmware, there is no possible way to sign it again. But if you can retrieve your blobs in time, you can store it on the Cydie servers, and retrieve it whenever you please, as cydia will act as an 'apple server', and return the blobs that apple created previously. According to itunes, Apple just signed your firmware

But nevertheless, I will still have a look at those videos, I might be wrong, just do not see how it could be possible

As I thought, this is for the Apple TV 4.0 firmware (4.0 on aTV, 4.1 in iTunes), and, as I mentioned earlier, you MUST have blobs saved on the cydia servers. This is impossible, since I only got my aTV AFTER apple stopped signing the 4.0 (4.1), so I can only save blobs for 4.1 (4.2)

Only a few weeks till xmas!!! :D
