Hi folks,

Well, I got my new system built up with the specs posted last week. No joy from this rig just yet though, as I am experiencing eternal issues with the graphic card drivers.

Install the OS (Vista 64) with mobo drivers. At this point is works perfectly. As soon as I install the graphic drivers though the system is a mess after reboot. The colors are messed up and I sit with eratic vertical line portions all over my display. If I leave it like this for a few minutes some of the OS portions start failing...I.e. the side bar, explorer windows, etc. After another 1-2 min the system just crashes.

Remove the driver or device from device manager and boom - all perfect.

Now I have already done a 2nd clean reinstall of the OS - no change
Downloaded new drivers from Ati - no change
Downloaded drivers directly from the card manufacturer site - no change
Downloaded and tried using 2 older driver version - no change

At this point I have given up...

Asus P5Q Mobo, E8400 CPU, HIS Ati Radeon 4850, 4GB G.Skill RAM, 610W PC Power and Cooling PSU

Not running SLi, 0% overclocking so far.

Is it likely that this card is faulty and needs to be replaced? I have kinda eliminated the possibility of it being software related, since I have reinstalled the OS and used a number of different driver versions.

Any thoughts or advice?

My thinking is that when running with the standard MS VGA driver the memory and the GPU does not get used. The card becomes a standard VGA adapter. As soon as the real drivers are intalled and the card operates at full, having issues at this point says to me it must be either the GPU or the memory on the card. Is this thinking correct or am I grasping at straw?

Well my 9800gx2 had the same problem, i had it swopped out.

sounds like your card is busted or your pci-e port one of the 2.

Someone has to ask the question.

Did you install the 64bit drivers?

Yup, all 64bit drivers.

@Killadoob - would a busted PCI-e port work fine with the standard VGA drivers?

Possibly as the card is not pushing it as much as when its installed i would imagine, although it does sound like your vga card is stuffed.

Just out interest have you tried xp just to ensure that it is not windows, i did that with my 9800gx2 just to ensure when i took it back they did not give some lame BS like have you tried xp :).

When my 9800gx2 broke, it would work without drivers and in safe mode but the minute it wanted to load windows it would blue screen.

I was considering trying in on XP, but don't own a copy of it which I can use. i got XP on my laptop, but since they don't give you any discs when buying one...argh! Don't really want to buy XP just to try it out with my graphics card tbh.

The other thing to note is that these cards are shipped with drivers for XP, Vista 32 and Vista 64. Thus having drivers specifically for the 64 bit Vista OS should indicate that the card must work properly in that environment, not so?

I agree with killa, you should take it back.
Your OS shouldn't make the card bug out, especially if you're using the drivers the card came with

Usually the drivers that is boxed with the GPU is 1. Outdated 2. Not compatible with x64 systems. 3. Crap

Try get the latest catalyst 8.10 drivers and see if that fixes your problems. MAKE SURE you downlaod the 64bit one.

If that fails then RMA the GPU!
