Hi guys!

We got a plasma TV the other day and connected a HD-PVR decoder and XBOX 360 to it. It's only got 2xHDMI ports and we have no home theater system or any dvd playing system on it at the moment. I only have my Logitech Z623 2.1 speakers connected straight to the PVR. I'm thinking of getting the Logitech Z906 that has SPDIF connectors on it as a surround sound system.

Currently I only have external audio when watching DSTV, if I play XBOX I have to play with the TV speakers.

If I get the Z906 and connect it with the SPDIF to the TV, will I have audio on all devices playing through the external audio?

Here is a pic of how the ports on the TV look:

If the TV passes thru 5.1 then I don't see why this wouldn't work
But none actually do.

I've yet to find evidence of a single model, even very high-end TVs, that perform 5.1 passthru/switching from HDMI input to optical or HDMI ARC output. The only way they output 5.1 is if its sourced from the embedded media player or DTV tuner.

So the only solution is to get one of those expensive Sony home theater systems with the amplifiers that has 3 HDMI inputs and HDMI output?

Not necessarily Sony, but yes to get true 5.1 audio from each source device you'll need a HTiB or AV receiver/amp that supports multiple HDMI or TOSlink (optical/coax) inputs.

Or you can run the optical cable straight from the xbox to the z906 using this cable for the xbox and get true 5.1

Single device is not the issue. What do you do with the 2nd (HDPVR) & further devices also requiring 5.1 audio? Has the z906 got multiple switchable 5.1 inputs?

its got two optical in if I am not mistaken... but no hdmi in.

I have z5500 that I got for 2200 during incredible connections half price sale last year sometime. I run optical from xbox to z5500 and i run analogue from computer to z5500... so I always get 5.1

If I want to watch something on dstv which is very very rare i just plug the optical cable from computer into z5500 and run it in stereo x 2 mode.

I have a pair of z906 they do have 2 optical inputs, but u still need to switch the input with the remote

What I'm trying to do is have one centralized unit where all sound runs through an external audio unit. So whether it be a surround sound syste, logitech speakers or an expensive unit such as the Sony (personal preference), I want my XBOX and PVR to have sound through the external speakers without it being too much of an issue (unplug cables etc).

It sucks that the TV has no audio out, everything needs to run on HDMI cables.

It's the Samsung 51" E450 plasma TV if it helps with suggestions?

Cool thank you, R2.8k is better than R6K. I see it has 2xHDMI inputs and 1xHDMI output, so it's perfect for the XBOX, PVR and then being a BLU-ray player on it's own to watch HD movies.

So this system will then run all components @ 5.1 etc and give me sound other than the bloody TV speakers?

Yep, audio coming in via the HDMI inputs (from the HDPVR & XBOX) will be played out in true 5.1 while the video will be passed on to the TV via the HDMI out.

Interesting option, but quite pricey considering you'd still have to add a 5.1 speaker system with DD/DTS decoder (either embedded or separate amp).

It's so expensive, I'll rather save and buy something decent or go for the device at bidorbuy for R489. Just not so sure if the sound quality will remain the same when using that device
