Hi

I took the plunge this week, and upgraded my system hard drive to SSD. She's been a reliable machine (early dual core - about 4 years old), but the old HD was definitely on its way out. In any case, after some research, I did the drive install and Windows 7 install myself last night. And the machine booted. :-O Impressed with myself so far. I'm having 2 problems though:
-No sound;
-Doesnt pick up my esata external drive although it does pick it up a usb drive.

After some headscratching, I realised it's probably the motherboard drivers. For which I don't have a disk. :erm: Ooops

What's the easiest way to find this online? It's an abit motherboard and they dont seem to have a website any more.

Also, where do I find the motherboard model number on my pc. Noob questions I know, but it is my first Windows install.

Thanks
Craig

Maybe here: http://abit.ws/page/en/download/dow...ITLE_IMG=_2Fdownload_2Fimages_2Fdownload.html

The model number of the motherboard should be physically printed on the motherboard itself (normally around the region where the pci-e port is, but differs by manufacturer) so you can take a peek inside the case.

Shout if you can't find the model number, there are other ways of checking but this is the simplest.

Just download this http://drp.su/
you will be sorted, just disable all extras it wants to install. do driver only installation, and run as expert mode undersettings

Go to the abit website, download drivers for the mobo from there, stick on a flash drive.

No need to install other crapware.

I would rather download the chipset drivers from the actual chipset manufacturers site (Intel, AMD, Realtek, Marvell etc etc) as they are usually more up to date seeing the MB manufacturers stop updating the website with newer drivers for their older products.

You can use things like pc wizard etc to list all the chipsets in use on your MB.

Okay, status update.

My first Windows install went well all things considered. First try was a bust, but I used it as a trial run. :-)

On second install, all drivers required were picked up by the drivers wizard app aside from one. It's called a mass storage device in device manager. The only thing not working on my pc is my esata removable hard drive so I assume it's related to this. It's one of those pci card slot jobbies that you plug into a sata port. The bios picks it up but Windows doesnt. It picks up my usb drive perfectly. I plugged in my old Windows xp drive to see if its the drive thats faulty. Worked perfectly, so it's definitely driver related.

Oh and Windows 7 refuses to update. I forgot to write down the error code, but I'll post it tonight.

Any ideas?

Go to start, control panel, Windows Update, Change Settings, Click Never check for updates then Ok, then go back and choose a different option from the list then click Ok again.
