I want to upgrade my current gaming system and need your help as I'm not a hardware guru:

My current system is:

Asus Vento 7700,
Intel Q6600,
Asus P5K Deluxe,
Asus 8800GT,
Asus 550watt,
4gig Kingston 800mhz,
2TB HDD space,
Samsung 2232GW + 2333SW,
Windows 7 64bit

Like I said this is for gaming, lets stick to under R10,000 please :)

Thank you!

Agreed, get a good cooler (which will last through many upgrades), OC that CPU and get a 5870. Many simoleons saved, and you can get yourself a full upgrade next year with an even bigger budget if you kept saving for it.

Any really.. If you dont plan to overclock much (doubt you will need to for a while) you can just get a vtx3d good reviews and big saving :)

Which one of the two will you reccomend:

EAH5870/G/2DIS/1GD5/A ASUS ATI Radeon HD5870, 1GB DDR5, 256bit (HDMI+2xDVI+ Display Port +VGA (using a converter) - PCI-Express
HD-587A-ZNF9 XFX ATI Radeon 5870 1GB DDR5 - STD EDITION - (Dual DVI-D, VGA, Display Port, HDMI) : PCI-EXPRESS 16X

The price is the same at +/- R4,000

Thanks!

I'd take the XFX, but if you are not going to OC then you may want to look at the VTX model.

If the Q6600 is a G0 it should OC very nicely. I have Mine running @3.0ghz and my ram @1066mhz. My voltages are stock for 3.0ghz! and my multilplier is @9 X 333mhz, Had to up my ram voltages from 1.8 to 2.1 and make sure the timings were correct (as per the manufacturers spec). An aftermarket cooler is essential (the q6600 runs hot on stock speeds with the standard intel cooler). My OC'd q6600 runs cooler now than it did at stock! No need to push over 3.0ghz, I tried from 3.0 up to 3.4 and did not notice enough gain to justify that much of an OC. Also I lapped my CPU, and run a Coolermaster V8 CPU cooler. Just remember that not all chips clock the same, so you will just have play with it tillits stable. I reccomend you test with Prime95.

I have had my chip for almost 3 yrs now, been OC'd for almost 2yrs, still no need to upgrade in my opinion. I play all my games at 1080p and have my graphics set to extreme. Crysis is the only game I ever drop below 20FPS. (BTW I have a XFX GTX280 OC Ed).

How hard/easy is it to fit the "Hyper 212+" and actually overclock a Q6600 (as I never done it before)?

Still also undecided on which to choose:

EAH5870/G/2DIS/1GD5/A ASUS ATI Radeon HD5870, 1GB DDR5, 256bit (HDMI+2xDVI+ Display Port +VGA (using a converter) - PCI-Express
HD-587A-ZNF9 XFX ATI Radeon 5870 1GB DDR5 - STD EDITION - (Dual DVI-D, VGA, Display Port, HDMI) : PCI-EXPRESS 16X

or what else in the nvidia range to consider within the same price range?

Follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Maybe buy some decent thermal paste, I don't know what's included with it.

You won't notice the slightest difference between those cards, perhaps look to effective warranty..

I would even recommend a 5850, for like R2500-R2800. At 1920x1080, which game doesn't run on max settings perfectly smoothly? Faster than a 5850 you really need like a 30" screen to appreciate.

if a 5870 will fit in yout case. Rather get it than a vapor-x.
I would have got the vtx3d if i had enough space in my case :(

I have a Asus Vento 7700. By the looks of it I don't think it will fit :(

I'm not too worried about the price, just want something that would increase performance a lot :)

And geez that CM HYPER + 212 COOLER is HUGE, looks like a lot of efford to fit that thing :)

^ What? Seriously? Dude it's friggin child's play..

Nothing beats the 212+ for price vs. performance. Cheap as chips, grab a second 120mm (1000-1600 rpm depending on your volume requirements) for exhaust (push-pull) and it's in the same league as the most expensive air coolers. Nice.
