Hi, i have had constant issues with my line, telkom came about 3 weeks ago and sorted out noise on the line caused by corrosion. Usually when the line doesn't sync i check the voltage coming from outside, when everything works fine it's about 62.5, everytime i have had an issue this drops to under 10, however the last week or so the line has been dropping randomly, sometimes every 10mins sometimes a few times a day.

Now when it does drop i check the voltage and it seems fine at 62.5 so i'm not sure if the issue is outside this time. The Noise margin shown in the router is usually 14.5db when everything works, when this drops below 10 we have no throughput but are still synced. The only way to get it working again is to reboot the router.

The filters and spliters all seem to be hardwired so i can't bypass them, brand new filters and splitters were put in by telkom about a year ago. The modem is about 2 months old, so don't think it's that. I just have no idea what's causing these noise margin drops. I am on a 4mb line and currently my sync rate is 1.6mbps.

I believe he is talking about the voltage on the phone line,

What is your SNR when sync is at 4mbps and working? is there some pattern to the drops, maybe a certain time in the day?

Hi, yea voltage of the line at the point it enters the house, DC i think. Usually the SNR is around 14.5 when it's working fine but fluctuates between 12 - 15db. For the first few days i thought there was a pattern, as it seemed to only happen from 3pm onwards, but today it dropped at 9am and 12:30pm, the only way to get the noise margin back up over 10db is to reboot the router, and the voltage doesn't change so no idea what's causing this.

So you no longer hear audible noises or an issue with the dial tone, when plugging only a handset into the first available socket in your home?

What are the actual stats (include sync speed, attenuation, SNR, CRC errors etc) reported by your modem?

That's DC. AFAIK if anything higher than 5 volts DC is detected; it's a line fault. Confirm with TelkomZA and let us know how you go?

Hi, yea there is no noise on the phone at all even when it drops. Those HEC errors are only for the last 10mins or so, it resets when i restart the router.

Lowering sync profiles generally fixes modem errors which also causes throughput issues, but with such low HEC it won't really make a difference.

Which of the modems LEDs change (stop emitting light, change colour etc) when the dropouts occur?

I used have this problem for two years of my line dropping at least 10 to 15 times a day , had Telkom coming out many times and every time they say it is my alarm system that sending a signals to ADT , about 2 months ago Telkom worked on our exchange for a weekend and from then never had drop in connection just shows you.

None, they all still green. The only thing that happens is the noise margin drops below 10dB, someitmes even a negative number and the only way to get it back above 10 is to restart the router. When i upgraded my line to 4mb it was fine for a month or two, this only started happening since telkom came to "fix" the line when it wasn't syncing at all.
