I am busy building a new PC to replace my ancient Core 2 Duo.

So, I have an Asus Z170-A motherboard with 2xGSkill 8GB memory cards. Currently I am only using the built in graphics while I wait for a new GPU to arrive.

If I try starting with the 2 RAM modules installed (in any configuration), It dies with a red memok light on the motherboard and also a red CPU light goes on. There is a button that you can then press and the MB tries to configure itself for the RAM but it never comes right. When this happens I cannot even access the BIOS. There is no output to the screen.

However if I try either of these memory modules individually, it all works fine. I can access the BIOS and see everything.

Could this be a power supply issue? I am currently using a Huntkey Green Power 550W from my old system. It should have enough power for what I have right now, but it really is not a great PSU. I am waiting for a new one to arrive next week, but was wondering if this could be the cause of my issue?

Has anyone else had memok issues on an Asus motherboard that can offer some advice.

Updating the BIOS has not helped.

Cheers
Russell.

I think you must hold that MemOK! light for 10 seconds or so.

Been there, done that. My finger is sore from holding that damn button :(

It goes into a search-blink cycle thing after you do that but never resolves.

Put one stick in then boot from memtestx86 if one gives anomalies then that one is faulty. Be sure to do it in slot 1

Try booting the board on 1 x 8Gb - Install your OS, visit the board website and flash with the latest BIOS and then try with 2 x 8Gb

Thanks, I already did that (I downloaded the software from another machine), so it has the latest BIOS firmware.

Turns out I bent 2 CPU pins on the motherboard somehow. Not sure how, (thought I was careful) but I think this is going to be an expensive mistake :(
