help with netgear WNDR3700 router

Afternoon, so i got this router yesterday and hooked it up to my old Telkom Modem and its then connected to two pc's via ethernet cable. Problem is, that because it was bought from someone else who seemed to forget his password I had to hard reset the router so could access the router with default password. In the process of the resetting I am now unable to connect to a PPPOE connection through the router, my Afrihost capped account that I use for gaming, and my others. If I connect ethernet cable straight into modem then all is fine and can connect to other PPPOE connections. Is there some setting or something blocking this option on my router? any advice is appreciated.

Hey,

This is most likely because your Telkom ADSL modem isn't in bridge mode.

First try to connect one of your PC's directly to the Telkom ADSL modem and dialing the PPPoE connection from the PC.
Once that works, try to dial it from the Netgear router.

Was the reason for purchasing the router not to use it as a pppoe router?
Ie multiple PPOE connections with a routing table??
From what I am understanding here is that you cannot connect from your devices through your new router to your modem with ppoE ?
Is this the case?

Telkom modem is in bridge mode, I have my primary openweb gold uncapped details set in the netgear router with the PPPOE settings. both PC's plugged into router, all works fine until there. Just wondering how to connect to another PPPOE connection like Afrihost, would I have to go into router settings and change it? or can I have multiple set up in windows like I have and just alternate when I want to see if another has better pings?
If I plug ethernet directly into modem outside of bridge mode then yea, all this is possible. Not sure what needs to be done to the router to make this possible if it is.

@deepdiver I think this explains your questions to what I am looking for. We actually only got the router cause my dad got it from work.

Yep pppoE are point to point connections so if you have made one from your router you shouldn't be able to make any more from your computer as they would be "tunneled" down your created ppp connection from the router when trying to create the pppoE connection to ISP.
Best way here would be to create additional pppoE connections on your router, it should be able to handle this.

Now basic routing theory:
you type in www.google.com computer does DNS lookup sees IP is out of subnet therefore gets routed to your default gateway(ie your router)
Your router then routes this packet out a connection.
This connection would be one of these pppoE connections if they both have the same weighting it should load balance across the two.
ie 1 packet goes down afrihost, 1 packet goes down openweb.
you could do some really cool things now.
like for example add to the routing table on the router all SA ip addresses therefore use local bandwidth for local addresses

or you could use dyndns to update out of one link so any vpn/ TS sessions you make use bandwidth from one provider.
or if you had a cooler router and you had IPSLA you could do ping tests and use the faster response link for traffic for lower latency.

Although all these connections would use your one "pipe" ie ADSL line bandwidth ie 4Mb.

That's not entirely true.
Some routers have a half-bridge mode (aka PPPoE Relaying or PPPoE Passthrough), which would allow you to make a PPPoE connection from the router, as well as from PC's connected to that router. This way the PPPoE connections made from the PC's won't be tunnelled through the PPPoE connection established on the router.

This kind of setup is very nice to have if you share like a shaped uncapped account with a few people by connecting to that account from your router. Then when you want to play games, you simply connect to an unshaped account (also with a PPPoE connection) from your PC. By connecting to another PPPoE connection from your PC, the traffic will only pass through the unshaped account, and not via the shaped uncapped account at all!

I won't recommend connecting to 2 accounts from a single router, unless you know what you're doing.
By default most of the routers won't perform load balancing if you connect to 2 PPPoE connections simultaneously, but it would rather use one of the connections as its primary Internet connection and only use the other one if you've defined a static route for it.

Thanks Panda didn't know about pppoE passthrough, would have thought something like that would only be available on higher end routers.
Ya I do agree about the two accounts but could be fun trying it out anyway.
I see this router does support rip and the QOS is not too bad, wouldn't load balance anyway there is no real point.
Probably the easiest is to change the details when you want to use the other account.
Does dd-wrt support pppoe passthrough?
have been meaning to buy a router that I can flash with this for a while seems like there are some really cool things you can do.
Remember a while back seeing a project for 2 pppoE connection with one for local and one for international but you kinda don't need to do this anymore with the price of ADSL dropping
