My laptop is on Win 7, browser is Firefox 27.0.1. I get these strange blocks/characters on the LinkedIn site. Do I need to install a special character/foreign language pack or what?

It's a custom font family they use to show icons - either you've disabled custom font rendering in your browser (doubtful) or was just simply a temporary glitch.

Spot on, thank you. I'd disabled custom fonts, makes it easier for me to read...

Is there a way to disable custom rendering on a per-site basis, rather than global?

People like you are the reason I dislike people in general.

You need to be clear on who you're referring to.

I'm a front-end developer. Disabling things that are native to a browser makes my life hell.

Example: Your browser tells me that it has full support for custom fonts, so I use them. You disable them, and things break.

It's almost like making a 180 degree turn in evolution.

Fair enough. I'm just surprised that it is only one site out of many (maybe hundreds) that I frequent that has this issue.

I prefer a consistent browsing experience, some of the font choices are at best unfortunate.

If you don't like the design choices, and legibility is important, you can always install readability addons (or use safari). That said, icon fonts should not be required to replace content, but should replace ui-only elements, ie as a resolution-independent replacement of sprites.
