Hi Guys,

not so IT literate as you guys, just want to know if 256mb pc266 and can be upgraded to 512mb ddr400. Will this switch work?

PC specs are: Intel Celeron, 1.8 ghz, 40 gig hard drive

please let me know

i agree, it should work.

It's not always the case that it will work, make sure which motherboard you have and look at the RAM charts, to see which RAM you could change or upgrade to, RAM Manufacturer is a big thing too, sometimes you can't use Transcend (as an example), then you have to use Kingston.

will i be able to use DDR 400 on this machine, seeing that Max CPU speed is 2600?

Memory is backward compatible, be carefull if it's a branded PC like a Dell or a HP. They're normally memory specific and will only use Kingston or the likes. DDR 400 that you're wanting to put in is rated PC3200 and should be fine.

it will work but if your motherboard only support 266 thats all you will get which is fine

The D845GLVA board provide the following memory features:

* 2.5 V (only) 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMMs with gold-plated contacts
* Unbuffered single-sided or double-sided DIMMs
* Maximum total system memory: 2 GB; minimum total system memory: 64 MB
* DDR266/200 MHz SDRAM DIMMs only
* Serial Presence Detect (SPD)

CAUTION:
Do not use ECC DIMMs with this board. Using ECC DIMMs could damage the board.

so if am right then replacing the 266 with DDR 400 will not be a good idea?

No man, it will work, you can have both of them in there if you have RAM slots open and will have 768MB altogether.

The DDR400 will just downclock to DDR266. I have done this type of thing hundreds of times and havent had a problem yet...

So are you saying that pretty much any new 184 pin will work on an older motherboard?

Would a higher denisity eg 1GB chip work on a machine originally spec'd at 512MB?

Well, ive used new RAM modules on VIA somewhere from 2003 motherboards and Duron CPU's...

A case whereit doesnt work would be rare, and if something has a BIOS limit (512MB), thats also not common...

Most motherboards support atleast 2gb of memory even 6 or 7 years back
