Help with Remote Desktop on old Marconi ADSL Router

Hi All

Please can someone help me.

I am trying to setup a remote desktop connection to a machine through an old Telkom Marconi ADSL Router, the beige metal one with the black aerial.

I have registered the current external IP of the router with DynDns but I wouldn't have a clue what to do next. Do I port forward or do I NAT the IP address......

Please help, i'm a bit of a noob at this kind of thing

You would have to setup up port fwrding on the router, the port you will be fwrding depends on the software you will be using to do the remote admin.

You will have to port forward or open up the RDP port on the router and use the dyndns address in the RDP client to access the server.

Consider the security implications of what you're going to do by giving world+dog access to your computer...

I'll rather create an incoming VPN connection (with the new connection wizard), add a new user with a complex password instead of just remote desktop...

Once you've connected via VPN, you'll also be able to use Remote Desktop (or VNC) if enabled.

The advantage of VPN is that it encrypts the connection, whereas Remote Desktop (and VNC) doesn't - which makes it a snap for attackers to sniff your passwords.

For VPN you'll need to open (and forward) ports 1723 and 47 on your firewall.

VNC ports are 5800 to 5900

The easiest way I have found to do it is to use Hamachi.
You just need to install and run Hamachi and setup vnc or remote desktop to connect on the Hamachi IP, then you install and run Hamachi on the pc you are wanting to connect from.
As The_librarian mentioned VNC and Remote desktop are not encrypted and therefore not very clever to use over the internet, VPN or Hamachi are and that will make sure your packets dont get sniffed!
