Hey all
I just signed up for the SAOL Fixed IP service http://www.saol.com/adsl3.php
SAOL set it up that I must do my own NAT.
So I have set up my WRT-54G running DD-WRT to use static IP like this

It is sort of ok, but every now and again the packet loss goes up really high sometimes more than 40%. It makes web browsing not work properly and of course gaming just dies.

What they gave me : http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/6895

Do you think there could be something wrong with my set up?
It is a Cisco Model 827 Router.
Anyway I can check the settings in the Cisco router?
Can someone please help me, I need to decide whether to cancel the contract or not.

Thanks
Jonno

I have no experience with that kind of account, sorry.

However, some observations:

1. Have you confirmed whether the packet loss is not internal (i.e. packet loss on your WiFi network)? I had a WiFi router once that would drop packets on my internal network before even hitting the Internet!

2a. Are you measuring packet loss to numerous different sites (international and local)? Maybe it is just an international connectivity issue that is happening right now.

2b. Have you called your ISP to ask them about this? (i.e. if they are currently experiencing issues)

If there is a period within which you need to cancel your contract and it is coming up, I'd rather be safe than sorry by cancelling (assuming you confirm the above points in the negative). It may prompt your ISP to look into the issue and try and solve it for you, and I would imagine you can always sign up again if you need to.

What made you decide on the Fixed IP service? Is a 'regular' ISP account with dyndns support not sufficient for your needs?

check your mtu settings, will default to 1500. telkom adsl uses 1492

Hey thanks all.
THe loss is not internal, I switched back to my normal ADSL account and everything is fine.
I was getting packet loss to both international and local.
I am going to phone them now when they open at 10 am
THe only problem is the R1500 setup fee for the CISCO that I have to give back to them anyway :-/
Well they advertised it as Unshaped running over fibre with a 15 gig soft cap free and the line rental.
SO that is R500 - R152 = R348 for 15 gigs of unshaped access. Too good to be true and that's probably why it doesn't work....
I will try with that MTU, it was on 1492. Could that have caused a problem?

Otherwise, does my set up look right in DD-WRT?

THanks
JOnno

Hey, I'm still having the problem.
I phoned them and they said that it is not normal, but it is not my setup.
It's going to go through debit order tomorrow.
What should I do?

I phoned them and they said that it is not normal, but it is not my setup.

Sounds like they did not give you a decisive response on what it is, what they are doing to fix it, and when you can expect it to be fixed. If this is the case, I would call poor service and cancel.

Having said that, you must use your own discretion/judgement when deciding....
