I would like to know how to set up a server for about 40-100 people. As of my previous LAN more than 10 people tried to connect to the server at the same time and some cant because there are already 10 people browsing or copying from the server.

I don't know what to do maybe I should install linux as it is free.

Can linux support more than 10 people to browse or copy from the server at the same time?

any help will be great

Nelis - yes Linux can - if you're running Windows then you unfortunately have to license the applicable server operating system with the correct number of CALs.

Windows XP Pro if memory serves me correctly can only have up to 5 clients accessing it.
Windows 2000/2003 Server can have up to the number of CALs you license. If you already have a Windows Server Edition family product then windows CALs are not too expensive.

It's quite pricey - I would recommend Linux running SAMBA as a file server if budget is a constraint and you are not going to use any of the other Windows features. Linux would support way more than 10 with just old desktop spec hardware.

Nelis my advice to you is this. Depending on howmany people are going to attend this lan. Buy yourself a few of those 16port or 24port 1000mbit switches (aka gigabit switches) and If your motherboard doesn't have a gigabit network card in buy a gigabit network PCI card. They are quite cheap now.

With the Switch if PC 1 copies from PC2 , and PC 3 copies from pc 4. They will all get gigabit speeds. Basically PC 1 and PC2 won't interfere with PC 3 and PC4's copying.

So that works out nicely specially if you maybe have a lan with about 24-50 people and everyone is copying all over the show. then pc 1-10 can copy from pc's 11-21 and they all get full speed. only when 2 people start copying from 1 person then the speed half's.

On the Switch, if someone has created a game over the lan. Say a quake server. and 10 people on the lan has joined him. and all the other people are copying from other people on the lan. Not the 10 people that are playing Quake3 on the lan, and also not copying from the server's machine then they can copy at full speed. and the lan won't have jumpy/jerky pings

For our lans we use DC++ to facilitate content distribution.

It takes the load off the servers and places it on all the peers. You just need to setup a DC hub.

using DC gets past the 10 connection limit, plus people downloading something is also downloading it from anyone who already has it on their PC.

Window XP Pro has a 10 simultanious connection limit. Window XP Home has a 5 simultanious connection limit. What kind of function do you want the server to perform (file, game)?

A mate of mine had a lan that had about 50 people. They decided to play some enemy territories, but 50 people copying it wouldve been insane, so they setup an FTP server. Fairly easy to administrate, but very flexible, and it doesnt require much effort from the people copying either.
