Help with setting up ADSL at home

Hi guys, well I just moved into my new house and need to get ADSL up and running. I previously had to use 3G internet at home so I'm not too familiar with the costs involed with setting up ADSL. Since I already have a phone + ADSL line in that the previous owner installed, what would it cost to get the line activated by Telkom so I can get started with Afrihost. I have a ADSL router. I would much rather hear it from the guys here than the buggers at Telkom who might not be completely honest. Thanks!
 
you'll need to sign for the voice line service (R133pm) even if you're not going to use it, and the ADSL part every month which varies based on speed. i hear one can skip the installation charge if you get the closer2 package.

thats what i did too.
don't apply for adsl first up,
i was told that i could get double billed if i ordered the voice and adsl at the same time so i didn't take the chance!

apply for the voice line first, then the day after its installed apply to have it converted to adsl..this can take up to 21 days.

when its done, they will call you and tell you to pick up your router at any telkom office in SA.

highly recommend you do the self install and save R500..
i did it and i'm not tech savvy...
as long as you can follow the instructions you will be fine.
you can call telkom on 10219 if u get stuck.

make sure you tell them when you apply that you will get your own ISP.

true story this, back when i first got ADSL i didn't read fully up on it before-hand and didn't know their "ADSL Installation" just involves a tech coming out just to plug it in and check if the phones are connected to a filter.
i think he noticed i wasn't too happy when he showed up just to tell me to wait for the dsl light to come on. maybe the fluent Zulu swearing gave it away? :) ...that he asked if he may call Pretoria quick.
about 5 minuets after he left the light came on and on the bill that month next to "installation" it said R0.00
 
Don't go for the 512k option - it's a rip off. It's either the 384k or 4mbps options.
 
You guys mention the ADSL installation charge, but I already have the ADSL ports filter boxes installed by the previous owner of the house so now I'm confused. Would Telkom have the cheek to charge me for installation even though everything seems to be installed? Is there an initial activation fee to hurt the pocket as well?

Unless you are taking over that physical Telephone number, yes they will try and bill you an installation charge. In the case of a "change of renter", the previous account holder of that number must be up to date with his payments and have settled all outstanding money. Thats why a "New installation" is sometimes simpler cheaper (in this case free)..
 
well you know the devil, thats why you have to specify you'll be doing a "self-install". there's no activation once-off i know of

now i'm kind of confused myself. are you taking the number over from the previous owner?
