I just got a fast fibre 100mbps connection now. Speeds are fine with the lan cable connected to my one pc but accessing through my wifi adapter on my other pc speeds are slow. Am using Mweb's Technicolor tg588v and a netgear n300 wifi adapter. Only getting around 30mbps through wifi. Should i buy this router at Takealot? Will this solve the problem? http://www.takealot.com/tp-link-ac750-wireless-dual-band-gigabit-router/PLID38533216

Is your wifi adapter of the USB variety? If so and it is a USB2 port, then your limit including TCP headers and USB bus constraints is somewhere around 280Mbit/s *.9 = 252 Mb/s - nowhere near your reported 30Mb/s.

What sort of speeds does a newish smartphone or tablet get on a speedtest?

Im no fundi but I suggest you get a program for your PC called inSSIDer Home. This will scan all networks around you and you'll be able to see if the wifi channel that you're using is congested.
Based on my circumstances, I changed mine to channel 1 from auto and also changed the frequency from auto to 40mhz.
This made a massive difference!

Tried usb 3 port still the same also tried my smartphone and also changed the channel no difference.
