hi people. Can anyone tell me how to acquire a static IP without having to hold on to a call for forty five minutes, just to be told that you cant get one on adsl and should get a digiline instead.

I need to get a static IP in order to forward ports for some of my apps, but Telkom employees dont seem to know how to help me.

Anyone please.

IS or verizon might offer a static IP solution (for an additional fee?). Try one of their resellers - Web Africa or OpenWeb comes to mind.

Why do you need a static IP for ADSL?
Sure it may be ideal but I'm using dynamic DNS services quite successfully to host services on.

Just set your PC LAN interface to a static IP and forward the ports on the router/modem to the PC. Then set up a dynamic DNS service on the router/modem.

If you're using PPPoE on the PC just install and configure a dynamic DNS app like ddclient.

sorry I'm a bit of a noob, could you explain how to do this? when I checked portforward.com it said that i need a static IP inorder to forward my ports, so that I can use soulseek.

This do-broadband crap is useless by the way. what's the point of offering someone fast internet which enables downloading of music and playing online games, if you're gonna cap them after 3 days. I'm already on 600mb.

I'll be changing to Neotel as soon as they're here, even if their packages are more expensive. Its the principle....

I think what he means is he needs is a static ip on his network in order to specify where exactly the ports are being forwarded to..

Not neccessarily a static IP which would enable him to host a site, etc on.
*shrug*

exactly, thanx.

I need to do this so I can use soulseek.

What router are you using?

My router assigns me the same address everytime i switch on my pc or reboot the router so i just went ahead and forwarded the ports and it works fine.

Hmm, i dont know much about that one.
Maybe someone who knows a bit more can help?

I dunno, maybe you can check if your lan ip changes at all, and if it doesnt then just go ahead and forward them..

=/

I'm using the Marconi Hellkom Premium Combo.

the wireless one.

:Dhey

Yeah i had same problem when i got it, just follow Portforwards steps and it should give you static IP like 10.0.0.137....and upwards. You can use 10.0.0.137 as your static. for your DNS...go to your router being 10.0.0.2 thru your browser.....and go to the left where it says DNS Clients and you can use those.

Hope you get it working....just tell me and ill reply ok:D
