Hi Their,

A friend of mine is living in Zimbabwe and bought herself a car their. The car is registered in her name is Zim too. She now want to come back to South Africa with the car and register it here.

What procedures does she have to follow to have the car registered in her name is South Africa.

Thanks

I am 90% sure that she will be charged import tax. I know that's what happens between here and Namibia, so it's probably the same with Zim

Thats a lot of work :)and not to many people are keen on doing it i would suggest to go to Q4U it would be the easiest way.

To register the car here, she needs to import it therefore pay 40% duty and VaT of the INVOICE value of the car, so your friend should get an invoice thats very low in value and bring the car in. Obviously she needs to go to customs to do the necessary work and then to the license office. Simple really.

Not simple at all..... You need Police clearance. If Car not RSA manufactured, then you also need SABS approval only then you start thinking of customs procedures

Hmmm.... you talking from experience ?

Dont know why you make it look like its a big deal, if you have all the documents in place, it will take no longer than a day to have the car registered. I've brought in cars from Zim and Lesotho every few months for 2 years, unless what you say was before i was born.

Had a Kombi that I brought back from Namibia and sold in SA, only had to pay 14% VAT, this has got to do with NAM being part of the Southern African Customs Union, no idea if Zim is part of this. Had to get police clearance from NAM and that did take time.

The law states that if you drive a car in SA with foreign numberplate you may only do so as long as it's not with a SA drivers license.
