Help with weak signal

Hi all. Please help. Mom recently moved into care home, but due to location and the number of peeps using the wifi, it's extremely erratic. With care homes in lockdown whatsapp etc is her only contact to the outside world. I have no control over the supply of the wifi. Is there something I can do to strengthen her wifi in her room? A dongle has been suggested, but I know nothing about them. She's on mtn pay as you go and we don't want to go into contracts. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA
