Morning.

I'm trying to fix a friend's wireless network. Been unsuccessful. Can't connect to the wireless network/internet from any laptops in the house.

I've connected this laptop to their Telkom 5102G wireless router with an ethernet cable and I have no problems accessing the network/internet. I have also logged into the router config, and everything under wireless seems fine.

Where do I start?

Here's the ipconfig when not connected with the ethernet cable:

Any help will be appreciated!

Are you able to connect using the wireless? From the info above, it doesn't look like you are actually connected via the wireless adapter.

I assume its XP?

Install SP2.
Install KB893357.
Check wireless in BIOS.
Reinstall new Atheros drivers.
Press wireless button on front of laptop.

Nope, not able to connect to the wireless - had to use an ethernet cable to connect to the router to come on MyBB.

This laptop is XP and is up to date, doesn't have a wireless button. Wireless light is off thought. Will have a look at the BIOS. There's also a Vista laptop and a Mac, which up until recently, were all able to connect to the wireless.

Used to be able to go Start > Connect to > Wireless Internet connection, and the different wireless networks would be displayed. Now nothing.

Check whats cooking in the device manager. Sounds like WinXP is not handeling the hardware part of it.

Install netstumbler while you're at it to check for interference..since the other laptop's aren't working either. Once you've got the media disconnected fixed that is.

Everything seems fine in device manager. Drivers installed and device is working properly.

Is it possible that the Telkom router's wireless has bombed out?

That is also possible. The chances of 3 laptops breaking is pretty remote. Maybe your router had been loadshedded once too often?

That's what I'm thinking.

Strange though that it's only the wireless that has gone, and that I can still get a connection with an ethernet cable.

My modem got hit by a bad case weather once, and the only thing that broke was the DSL portion. DHCP is still working 100%. It depends, IMO, where the weak link in the design is. Maybe the wireless portion was not protected for some reason.

Wireless config looks fine.

Try the following:

1. Change the channel to Channel 11.
2. Take off the authentication, i.e. make the wireless network open.

Try connecting any of the laptops.
If it connects, then it's not your router. It has something to do with the security. Rebuilt the network with different settings. make sure it works on open network and then add the security.

If it didn't connect on the open network, then definitely a router problem.

I have a similar problem see thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=114324.

Two of my laptops (XP and Vista) are able to connect to the wireless router with no problem, and can also access the internet.

With a third notebook (XP), I try and connect to the wireless network, and it wont even ask for the network key. Just tells me it cannot connect to the network. Dunno what to do, cause with the other two I have no issues.

Havent yet tried installing LLTD - anybody know anything about this?

catwaesel..set the wireless network for windows to control and not a 3rd party software.
Check advanced settings under the wireless adapter if adhoc is disabled and check if your connection ip is set accordingly

Windows is controlling the wireless device. Not sure about the connection ip, will try check it tonight. Do you know about that LLTD installation?

Thanks for the informative replies. Will try that tomorrow, JayN.

just a quick question when you first had the problem what happened before that.

Not sure exactly what happened or even if anything happened, when ever I go there it's just the domestics. :D

Going to find out when it stopped working.

Morning.

Just want to check if there is anything else I can try (other then JayN's advice) to get the laptops connected/router working.

Please post any suggestions that I can try. :)
