hi ppl

i have a motorola mpx200 and im using it as a modem through USB to connect my computer to the internet. im using vodacom GPRS. i have set up my initialization string as +CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet". My phone is able to connect to the internet but everytime i connet, my phone shows me its using WAP instead of GPRS and eats away money! can someone plzzz help???

Needs to be in modem properties in xp.

what do you have entered in the "telephone number" field of your dial-up connection?
it should be *99# or something similar to it

also, have you received the correct settings for gprs from vodacom?
it is normally named "internet.gprs" by default, i think...

This setting should not have changed but its worth having a look at:

Click on the menu item, goto settings, then more, then 'data connections' and select the work connection settings.
Click menu and options and check what the setting 'my desktop connects to' is - change to 'the internet'.

Also make sure the settings for internet have the right apn's.

i have this initialization string in the modem properties for XP. and i have the correct dial-up number. My access point for my vodacom GPRS is internet and i have that as my APN. just to make sure, "internet" in the initialization string is the APN right??

just another thing. some internet sights sites say i should have AT before the initialization sting. what is the difference?

No in my experience putting in the AT command does not make a difference - its just a standard way to communicate with modem. You will find if you open a hyperterminal to communicate, most commands start with AT. But if you are using a device or interface, that command seems to be added in as default if you did not put in manually.

Theres something that puzzles me about your connection. You say that your phone connects to wap and you can see that. Also that it eats your bill which implies there's traffic. But if there is traffic, that means something on your pc is interpreting and querying the wap protocal - nothing on xp does that by default. You should only get traffic upon handshake and then nothing thereafter.

I've seen this before where an internal firewall blocks ports like port 80(http - web browsing), but there is traffic on other ports and therefore you could be in a similar situation to yours. ?

When a command is sent to the modem it must be preceded by an AT. However if you don't have the AT in the init string it will be added by the XP dialer software so it makes no difference.
By the way the phone number determines whether GPRS (you pay per byte transfered) or CSD (you pay as you would for a voice call) is used. If you use *99# the phone will make a GPRS connection.
What phone number are you using?
