I currently have a 6 meg but telkom tell me that I can't get a 10mb. I live less than a kilometer away from the exchange and live in Crawford, Capetown. I see you guys tell a lot of people about their modulation and stuff and they should change it adsl2+.

These are all the modulations my router give me:

NO_MODE
ADSL_G.dmt
ADSL_G.lite
ADSL_G.dmt.bis
ADSL_G.dmt.bis_DELT
ADSL_2plus
ADSL_2plus_DELT
ADSL_re-adsl
ADSL_re-adsl_DELT
ADSL_ANSI_T1.413
MULTI_MODE
ADSL_G.dmt.bis_AnxM
ADSL_2plus_AnxM

I want to know must I change my modulation to all the one that say adsl2+ or only the main one "ADSL_2plus" ?
Thanks any help much appreciated

I'd say try changing it to "ADSL_2plus". The only other modulation supported in SA is "ADSL_G.dmt"

I highly doubt that changing the modulation would allow you to suddenly get more than 6Mbps, because G.Dmt modulation should be able to go up to 8Mbps.

IMO you don't really need more than 6Mbps, unless it is for a business or many people sharing the line.

Modem Status
Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 631

Those noise margins are good enough to get 8Mbps easy.

What about my stats? Sorry for ignorance. I've been told I can get around 6Mbps if lucky?

DOWN/UP

Data rate (Kbps)

Noise margin (dB)
12.4 9.0

Output power (dBm)

Attenuation (dB)

fxit_man:
Your SNR margins (noise margin) is good enough for 4Mbps, but I can't recommend pushing your line to 5 or 6Mbps, because your upstream SNR margin is already not that great.

Thanks :( What is the reason for the bad noise margin? Don't suppose short of moving house there is anything I can do about it?

The poor SNR margins are due to your ADSL line distance to the DSLAM, so moving house is pretty much the only option.
Using a better ADSL modem (eg. D-Link DSL-2500U / TP-Link W8960N) might allow you to push it up to 6Mbp, but I really can't guarantee that it'll make a difference.

In my opinion 1Mbps ADSL is fast enough for most households. I'm sharing my 1Mbps with my brother and my neighbours, and it is enough, but I won't mind something faster if it wasn't so expensive.

Cool. Thanks. I'm on a Belkin G+ Mimo router

You're aware of the small price difference between 1Mbps and 4-10Mbps. For 10 times the speed? If you're sharing the connection with your brother AND your neighbours, it shouldn't be too difficult to close the small gap in price for _10_ times the speed?

i heard some of the 10mb exchanges have actually been limited to not allow a sync higher than 6mb *shrug*

as for the small price gap between 1 and 4 meg, in terms of an uncapped account too?

Fragtion, the uncapped 10Mbps accounts are considerably more than the 1Mbps uncapped accounts + I'm living just too far from the DSLAM to make 8-10Mbps possible.

I think I would be paying roughly double the amount for a 10Mbps connection than what I would on a 1Mbps connection, and I really don't need a faster connection, because I'm scheduling all my downloads.
