Free State Stars forward, Richard Henyekane, sadly passed away last night after being involved in a car accident on the roads in Bethlehem in the Free State.

A statement from the club this morning said:

"Free State Stars hereby expresses its heartfelt condolences on the passing away of star striker Richard Henyekane in the early hours of this morning.

"Henyekane was travelling with four other passengers when they were involved in a tragic motor vehicle accident.

"He was the only one to lose his life in this incident.

"We wish to say to the Henyekane family that they must know that we are with them at all times, and trust that they will put all their sorrows in the hands of God the Almighty in this hard period.

"To the Stars family of fans, sponsors, supporters and others we believe that this is a period in which you will remain steadfast in the praying for Henyekane’s teammates as they come to terms with this sad moment."

The sad news comes within four months of the sad passing of his brother, Joseph, who passed away in December.

Everyone at Soccer Laduma would like to send their condolences to the Henyekane family who have lost two sons in the space of 16 weeks.

His twin brother Joseph died 4 months ago in Dec 2014. :(

Own up if you read it as Heyneke and felt a bit relieved that we were getting a new Bok coach.

Condolences to Henyekane's family.

Henyekane family devastated by double death

Bethlehem - Free State Stars soccer player Richard Henyekane, whose memorial service will take place in Bethlehem in the Free State on Thursday, was a humble man who was well respected in his community, a childhood friend said.

Daddy Matlhko, who knew Henyekane since they were children, said the family were deeply saddened by his death.

"We actually are just devastated, especially since about four months ago we buried his younger brother Joseph. We are still coming to terms with the passing of his younger brother," Matlhko said.

"Richard was a very well known guy and I expect there will be a lot of people at the memorial service. He assisted everyone around him and he was very much well respected in the community."

When Matlhko thought of Henyekane, what came to mind was a humble man who respected those around him.

"Richard was a humble, humble person. He never let fame and whatever go to his head and I'm saying he could associate with anyone," he said.

"He was that kind of person, very respectful towards elders, and towards the younger as well."

Well-wishes

He said Henyekane's family was very appreciative of the well-wishes and the support they have received from the public in these trying times.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) will also observe a moment of silence in respect of the late former Bafana Bafana and Free State Stars striker.

This will apply to all this week’s Absa Premiership, National First Division (NFD) and Nedbank Cup quarter-final fixtures.

Henyekane, 31, who played for Golden Arrows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Free State Stars, died on Tuesday morning in a car accident.

His brother, Joseph, 30, died unexpectedly in his Kimberley home in December last year. The cause of death was not known, according to an SABC radio news report.
