Cape Town - Black youth radio station YFM is looking for a young, white man - Afrikaans or English - to become a DJ as part of "affirmative action".

This urban radio station broadcasts from Rosebank, Johannesburg. It has over 1.4 million listeners, and can be heard countrywide on DStv's radio bouquet.

With the has-to-be-white-appointment, YFM is saying the broadcaster believes in "affirmative action".

"But we reject tokenism and are looking for a white-hot white boy" to become a member of the station's permanent announcers' roster.

Tumelo Diaho-Monaheng, YFM's programme manager, says the station's audience consists of the urban youth culture segment and are mostly black, but music should not be categorised by colour.

Emerging trend

"We're seeing an emerging trend among young white people who like to listen to our station and come to our parties. The new white radio announcer will also be chosen for their unique talent and ability to connect with the audience."

The new white announcer must be between 18 and 25, and besides English and Afrikaans, must also be able to throw in a bit of black language.

Prospective applicants can go to YFM website. They’ll have to be able to keep up with the black announcers' discussions of current affairs.

Applicants must also choose four songs which they think will be perfect for YFM's playlist.

I dont think they pay all that well, but from what I have seen, the fringe benefits rock! You will be beating the women off you with a stick! :D
 
I heard DJ Sbu (YFM DJ) gets paid R100 K a month, yep, R100 K a month. So I think the white boy will get paid very well :p

R100k p/m for a part time job..?

It's R100 K a month

Lavhee by far ka di Radio station DJ's the last I checked Jeremy Mansfield was the highest paid radio DJ. Its said gore in 2000 he was earning R1M per annum.
Now the list below is for the last time I checked last year and obviously its estimations. Dont know how true this is...

Slightly aside - 702 are doing this birthday wish thing. The other day Eishkom gave a full bursary to a white boy to study electrical engineering. I was impressed.

So why does Cliff always complain that radio doesnt pay well on Idols? R70k! That's a whole frkn lot!
Would be interesting to find out what Jacaranda pays their dj's since they have the most listeners in Gauteng.
 
Would like to see some white affirmative action on 5fm's part. I can see how they're slowly but surely turning the station into MetroFM.

Edit: actually, they're doing it at quite an alarming pace. Not slowly at all.
