Hi Guys

I came across the Hetzner server action through a post by @cavedog. I am considering a server for backup purposes - will be backing up my Xneelo machine. Would you take an I7 or a Xeon E3?

Thanks
Kitty

Nope.

That seems like a mission on it's own.

Just use Dropbox for unlimited space.
Contact me if you need some help with it.

If you intend to keep physical backups, this is complete overkill as well.
Unless you hoard Terabytes at a time :p

I'm not really sure this makes sense for backups, there are probably more affordable and definitely more convenient options available for that.

What kind of storage requirements do you have?

:/

If you must at least put an incremental backup solution in between.

And remember if you have dropbox installed on the system you're trying to back up ransomware will eat your files and your backup

You know Hetzner sells storage boxes too right? If you're using it for backup then just get a storage box.

Incremental and file versioning is an absolute must...

Use another drive as incremental then. Or use Dropbox.
That's a stupid comparison, no offense.
Ransomware or malware could effect any type of data. It's not more prevalent in Cloud Storage.
That's a complete false statement. Dropbox is currently the most secure Cloud Storage provider available.
They also actively fight ransomware.

gents I store everything on a RAID0 array of Vertex 4 SSDs from 2012 am I safe?
Nope.

You need to run lifespan checks on those SSDs. SSDs have fixed life, unlike a hard drive. Either can fail anytime though.
SSDs wear off by "writes", not reads. So it's not the best choice for a backup medium.

Wasn't arguing against dropbox...I was arguing against using dropbox as a backup solution in itself.

Drives aimed at file sync with a bit of file history tacked on <> backup

They're fine as a backend/target for it though

Lol when people on mybroadband hear RAID0

Your data will obviously just last as long as the weakest drive in the array.

I Like RAID0 for my downloads and non sensitive data. Decent performance and max storage space. :)

@OP these Hetzner boxes are decent. For less that R500 a month if you manage to not pay the tax it's a bargain. 1Gbps unlimited connection. 2 x 3TB in RAID0 for performance is decent or RAID1 if you want to be safe and 16/32GB RAM is a decent server.

Hetzner DE has private peering links with big providers like Google, Facebook, Amazon, nFroce, Leaseweb, OVH ect and in SA Afrihost, Webafrica, Axxess, Telkom peers with Hetzner at DE-IX so it gives decent performance locally.

Apparently having an address in the US and paying via Paypal in the currency it's billed skips it not sure though haven't tested.

Thanks will give it a shot - they basically told me they're charging me VAT even when I sent my company docs in and said I need to claim back from SARS...

I had a few Truserv+ from Hetzner, the i7 ones are terrible, the Xeons were a little better.
Either way I have been down the road of using an older server at home and its not all its cracked up to be, noisy, power hungry and generally not worth it.

Azure archive storage.

You pay for ingress/egress but nothing else - unless you elect to have redundant copies propagated elsewhere

I asked them about the peering and they said NO.
