Hetzner's new data centre in pictures

The difference being that the germans probably didn't use a tin-roof structure and the walls look so thin that you could probably crash through it with a bicycle. Perhaps it's just for their own hosting and not BYOD customer hosting (i.e. rent and populate your own rack). Looks like Makro built this one ;-)

hetzner have been doing hosting on Makro shelving with Desktop / Point-of-sale type PC's on the shelving for many many years.
Many a person has seen Hetzner staff walking into the data center who handfuls of cheap 300W power supplies. They seem to take the approach of "lets buy the cheapest equipment possible and just replace it when it breaks."

This is why they have cooling and power issues in the first place.

But hey, this model clearly works for them.

It been a while since that was the case, have you actually seen their last 3 DC's?

Been to a few T-Systems data centre's, and honestly, this is a complete joke compared to that. There was one centre, which was about 30 years old, which looked like this. But the rest of them have completely different cooling system, proper shelving and the air is regulaled.
 
So you just lob some explosive device on the roof and you damage a couple of servers? :whistle:

Did they ever gave thought about that sort of incident? :erm:

Company's servers is in a walk-in safe.

And those pictures of the building doesn't inspire me with confidence.

I was inside a National Key Point building the other day - security all over the place, proper design etc... but this just doesn't seem to cut the cake...

Even the old SITA building in Pretoria have a thick concrete roof...
 
I just got a mail to inform me that my server will soon be moved to the new Data Centre. I hope I get a good spot..... preferably not too close to the door or the street.

I think it was better not knowing where my server has been all these years....
 
So we have a couple of okes here who have been inside a few DC's, now they think they know everything there is to know about DC construction ?

This is why we can't have nice things...

So I can just drop a JDAM on the Standard Bank DC and they're screwed !

No.
Put it this way... you can drive your truck off the road and plow through the entire DC without leaving a scratch on your truck... ok, except maybe when you go through the palisades.
 
That place looks like a electricity hog to me.

I remember once in a DR planning meeting, the one executive boasted that a DR site was not needed, we were hosted at Dimension Data Campus. The look on his face when I pointed out our servers were about 100m away from a helipad that was in daily use...

Huh? I wonder how they got past any DR Compliance audit with that statement.
"Where is your DR site?"
"Here"
"Where?"
"Are you daft? We are in the prod DC. If you go out the door, across the 3m wide hallway, then you walk into the DR site. It is a semi-warm site; not because the air conditioning is not as cold, but because it is nothing in there...but because it is like 3m away, we can just carry our things across and voila. So not cold, not warm, juuuust right"

Last I heard is the Standard Bank are reluctant to share their DC with others, hence the emptiness.

I have some servers at hetzner in CT, one of them is a xeon and the others are i7 860's with asus desktop boards in them. We have only had them for about 2 years so yeah they still supply desktop hardware in some DC's.
