Hewlett-Packard To Kill Windows 7 HP Slate Project

Hewlett-Packard has killed off its much ballyhooed Windows 7 tablet computer, says a source who’s been briefed on the matter.

The device was first unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at CES 2010 in January and was supposed to hit the market in mid 2010. But our source tells us that HP is not satisfied with Windows 7 as a tablet operating system and has terminated the project (something CrunchGear mentioned months ago).

HP may also be abandoning Intel-based hardware for its slate lineup simply because it’s too power hungry. That would also rule out Windows 7 as an operating system.

So what will HP use as an operating system? Look for Google-powered devices, which have already been announced. And HP really does seem determined to make a go of the Palm WebOS. They said how important it was to them yesterday, and they will likely experiment with porting it to a slate-type device.

Will WebOS emerge as a successful operating system for tablet devices? That seems very unlikely given the dominance of the closed Apple OS and the likely success of the open Android and Chrome operating systems from Google. To get traction from third party developers with WebOS HP will need to sell a lot of units. And it’s not clear what they’d gain from all that effort, anyway. HP knows how to build and sell hardware, not operating systems.

The people who want a real slate computer will not buy an iPad. It's just a toy.

There are 3rd party mod companies which mod Apple Macbook (pros) into touch sensitive slate devices. They would head that way for now I guess. Then there is the Notion Ink device - Adam.

The MS Courier and HP Slate have gone down the drain, who is next? Nevermind JooJoo All these guys thought that the Apple tablet would retail around $1000 so they would have enough room to undercut them.

Before iPad, HP would never have priced a tablet device close to the $500 mark. Now that's what I call a game changer

iPad 64GB 3G costs $899 - to order into SA from Ebay costs over $1000 + shipping and customs/VAT. That's a lot of money to pay for a device with no content - we don't get iBooks/iTunes Music and Movies in SA and many apps are not available to users. For the vast majority of users it is a toy - an entertainment device - it sucks though because you have to transcode most material - I'd buy a $400 Cowon A3 which plays virtually every video file, audio file you can throw at it at a higher resolution S-IPS dislay too but for those who wanna transcode and encode away (since you can't legally buy stuff in SA via iTunes) enjoy!

iPad is not a slate. It's a toy. However, Steve Jobs thanks you for the cash.

The only bad thing so far about my iPad is that I no longer have any use for my laptop.
Peter, I disagree totally with your toy-story. I use the iPad for work and productivity (and entertainment) daily.
