Going to see The Hobbit tomorrow and saw that it was showing in HFR 3D - is this worth it watching it like this? How much better is it than just normal 2D?

Ag nee ***kit. Lees jy nie threads nie? We've answered this already enough in all three of the related threads :erm:  :(

I watched it in 3D and it was like all 3D movies I've watched: too dark and a pain in the ass having to wear those stupid glasses. The actual 3D was the same as other movies but it does nothing for me. I would have preferred watching it in regular 2D but that option was not available at the Ster Kinekor I go to. Maybe the high frame rate would have looked better in 2D especially in the fast moving scenes.

No clue. Clearly.

3D & HFR 3D are two different things from what I have learnt

Unfortunately I have to kinda agree with Vinodh.

I saw it in HFR 3D at Sandton City. And while it was slightly better than most other 3D movies I have seen, it was not a whole lot better.
It suffers from all the usual problems that go with 3D.
I had hoped it would be a lot better judging by what I had read beforehand.
Maybe South Africa just has crappy cinematic equipment, but it really wasn't that much different that I would make the effort again.
(I lie, I probably will next year).

Yes, HFR = high frame rate = 48 FPS, which supposedly makes the 3D a bit better. That being said, most people says its "too realistic" and "not cinematographic enough".

Normal movies are 24 FPS.

As far as I know the only two cinemas in the country which supports HFR is Sterkinekor Sandton and Gateway in KZN (not sure about the Numetro's).

if you say so

Just got home and I thought it was great! I booked online for Sandton City to go and see the 3D HFR version.
We left a little early to grab a bite to eat first, and that was fortunate because it took us half an hour to find parking at Sandton City.
When we got there I realised that the Cinema they had put us in (Cine 2) was not the HFR version.
I went to the ticket line and they just swapped it for the HFR version (Cine 9) with no arguments.
The cinema wasn't very full... less than 15 people.
The HFR 3D version is definitely brighter and better than normal 3D, but the downfall is still the crappy 3D glasses that you have to wear.
I'm thinking of going to my optometrist and having my own pair made with my own prescription.
I had a headache afterwards, but no sense of nausea. I did take a Valoid before I went and that made me really sleepy! :p

But yeah, the actual movie itself really rocks in 3D.
It felt a little bit fast as the beginning but you get used to that really quickly.
I was keeping an eye out for the other two criticisms that I had heard people make.
Is it TOO REALISTIC? So much so, that it is distracting? No, it still feels like a movie.
Can you see the make up and set pieces? No, I could not. everything looked just fine, even amazing!
The scenery is eye popping.
Highly recommended!

Yep, that's what I say so.

Ok. But we wouldn't mind if you say something different again... just curious to which garry am I talking now to since seems neither can be taken seriously.

I have no idea who "garry" is.
There is no contradiction.
The movie was awesome, in 2D and in 3D.
It's better than any other 3D movie I have ever seen (except maybe Avatar).
And the HFR 3D is definitely noticeably better than normal 3D, especially post production 3D.
But I'll bet that it looks even better in other countries which have better quality projection equipment.

3D Movie technology as a whole has it's drawbacks and limitations.
I've mentioned those in other threads.
Even 3D television looks FAR better than Movie 3D.
And unfortunately the HFR 3D has had a very limited release in SA.
If I can find a way to get to see the HFR version of The Hobbit in 3D on a 3D TV, you can bet I'm gonna do that.
So is it worth it driving all the way to find an HFR cinema?
I dunno, probably not at this stage.

Let me clarify even further.
The movie was awesome, but I'm still not sold on 3D movie technology as a whole.
Call it a personal preference or whatever, but so be it.

No [-] spin [/-] saga is complete without a trilogy

"the actual movie itself"

..... and I was largely addressing those critics who said that the HFR version was a failure.

Maybe this will help you....

8/10 = 2D version of the Hobbit
7/10 = HFR 3D version of The Hobbit (mainly because of the 3D distraction)
6/10 = Normal 3D version of the Hobbit (because it's not HFR, but still a damn good movie).
5/10 = average for other 3D movies (and less).

I did some reading...and it does not sound like we will see HFR in Bluray....at least not in full HD res. Something to do with it not being supported by the Bluray specs or something.

Awww no. That will suck. What about an HFR 2D version?

It is not the 3D that is the problem I think. It is because the Bluray standard does not allow for HFR @ Full HD....only @ 1280×720 can you go up to 50 frames per second. Highest frame rate @ 1920×1080 is 24 frames per second.

Because it is not part of the spec...many players will not play correctly if the movie is saved in HFR @ full HD. Some say that the specs might be updated for HFR if there is a demand...some say most likely it wont.

Ja, that makes sense! Plus the file sizes will be huge for those of us that are, ahem, downloading the movie! ;)
