As a professional digital recorder, the FlashMic is second to none

Recording audio in the field is always a little tricky. Environmental noise plays a major factor in the quality of the recording, and if you do not have decent hardware, chances are good that the quality of the recording will not be suitable for most uses – especially not if you intend on broadcasting the recording.

In many cases, the only solution to this problem is carrying around a small mixing desk and microphones, which you can hook up to a laptop to do a recording. While this will give you good sound quality, it is not always practical to do so.

The FlashMic offers such a logical solution that I kept wondering why no one had thought of this before during the time I tested it. The device itself looks pretty much the same as any other microphone out there. The only difference is the slightly longer handle, an array of playback buttons, and the LCD.

The idea is really simple: add two AA batteries, switch on the unit, and when you are ready, simply press the Record button. Should you wish to monitor the recording in real time, simply connect a set of headphones - there is a 3.5mm audio jack located at the base of the FlashMic. You can also use this to listen to previous recordings. The audio is recorded onto a 1GB internal flash memory module. Even though this doesn’t seem like much, the FlashMic can record around 18 hours of audio and its batteries will last about half of that in hours.

To get your digital recordings on your PC, you can simply connect the FlashMic via USB to your PC. There is also software provided that allows you to configure a variety of settings - some of which you can adjust directly from the microphone itself.

Thanks to the Sennheiser omnidirectional microphone, the sound quality of the recordings is superb. Good enough, in fact, that the FlashMic is used around the world by journalists for recording interviews for transcribing. The built-in LCD makes it very easy to see the status of a recording. Next to the playback and record buttons, there is a marker button that will insert markers into the recording when you press it. This makes it easy to jump to important sections in the audio recording when you play back the audio file.

As a professional digital recorder, the FlashMic is second to none, and we will be adding one to our arsenal of tools for recording audio at launch events and interviews.
