Heres something interesting I heard from my service provider concerning our latency issue with WOW the last few months. He said that the wow servers changed their provider thats y we are getting worse latency how true that is I dont know anybody hear anything diffrent? My service provider is Imaginet and I play on the European server.

Cant speak for the EU servers - but i seriously doubt Blizz would just change ISP, and even if they did im sure they would take into account various effects that could have on the users connected... a ping jump of 400ms +- is a drastic change that could effect their business. I think the techie who told you that is pulling answers out his bum.
I apologize in advance if im wrong and hes right tho ;p doubt it tho...

Hi Murdoc

What account u have with them? I am getting between 550 and 750ms on a unshaped 4mbps line!

I get the same on a 384line
Raiding a lot with the odd pvp spree here and there

I wouldnt beleive a thing your SP tells you, on fri night i was gettin 2-4k latency on my axxess unshaped account so i phoned in, the guy told me its because its weekend and the wow servers are busy, so i logged onto my shaped telskom account and i get 900ms.

in my opinion the people you speak to when you call in have very limited expertise and will bull**** you.

WHich im more than happy with cause at times (about 6months ago) i constantly DCed in any raid or BG and was forced to quit wow
Well im back now with a 600ms average and happy as pie :)

Latency

mmmm very interesting. Murdoc ur on a 384k line I am on a 4mbps dont u think mine should theoritacally be better than urs? The guys at imaginet also play WOW so I should think they know what they are talking about.

Iknow I know
Ive seen it with my own eyes. I have afew friends with 4meg lines and more often than not their ms is within 50-100 of my 384K
Which suggests what many have said , that all data is being shapped onway or another...

4mb should not be faster than 384k.
Data does not move faster on a 4mb line.
It can just send 10 times more data at once.

exactly, its not the size of the pipe thats important, its the time it takes for the info to get to the otherside.. If you measure your b/w consumption you will c you dont need more than 4kbps at any one stage... really minimal.

so 384 -4mb makes no diff.

And even if those guys at imaginet play wow - they still dont have a clue what blizzard are doing...

and suprisingly im getting a lower ping on a shaped account than both my unshaped accounts... How the hell did telkom get that one right? im paying for unshaped and too scared to go shaped just incase it gets worse...

Thats Scary

So what u saying is that having a 4mbps line is a total waste of time if your just using it to play WOW? Could save myself a crap load of money every month.

Thats all true, but be warned that the lower the bandwidht the more lag spikes you can expect. Plus in areas like major towns where there are lots of people the bandwidth required is a lot higher so low bandwidth connections will suffer more.

As to the wow server provider change... BS
WoW is still with Telia and have been with them for the last 3 years. As for Friday evening more people online... BS
There are more people online during week nights than on friday nights...
Telkom likes doing repairs during weekends though, as their corporate customers won't complain then.

TBH the wow network in europe alone is prob 10 times bigger than the entire South Africa broadband network.

Well if you only play WoW and nothing else....well yeah probably is a waste.
Although your patches will download a lot faster :p

No really. Add one more person and two simultaneous VOIP connections and you will find the 4 mbps line way better than the 384 kbps line.

well duh - might as well throw in some torrent downloads as well, plenty b/w to use up ;p
2 ppl on a 384 line doesnt work so well... tested...
but if its only one person its fine...

And although 4mb is fast download - upload is equaly important in wow - sooo your looking at max 384 upload on a 4mb line...

Hi Brian

Do you remember who you spoke to at imaginet ?

Latency
