That little snot of a speed camera that is hidden at the base of an overhead highway sign, barely visible. Looks like a simple aluminium box 500x500 (eyeball estimate), also close to that roadside "rails" (that things that prevent your car from driving off a cliff, for example. idk what's it called)

I got an speeding ticket SMS from paymyfines, logged in, da. My car going 135 in 120 zone. I did not drive this car at that day, but my parents had to attend a function in Montana, Pretoria by 9 that morning, were a bit late, parents live in Mpumalanga. They charged me 500bux for this offense.

What is legality of those hidden speed cameras?? Everytime I see that box on the road, I wanna smash it to bits, Tsek! I feel like it should be visible like any other speed camera on a pole, where people can see it. The only 120 sign with a speed camera on it, is like 5km back...
Where that speed camera sits, it is in the emalahleni/witbank area on the N4 highway.

*ends rant/blabbering...

I've seen the cam. It's inconspicuous, given it's surrounded by metallic objects. When you finally notice, it's too late. The municipality owes Eskom over a billion thus, trying hard to generate revenue.

If you know it's there, is it truly hidden..?
Since they attached the image with the offending vehicle, they also include some metadata, like location. I figured it out where the thing may be located on Google Maps, and everytime I passed that location, lo and behold, I saw that little snot. Now, I know... Funny, you don't see the box when you are driving towards it, where the camera is pointing at but on the opposing side of the highway, it is clearly visible, seeing the backside of the unit.

Just because he had time to measure it doesn't mean he know's it's there.
Haha, measure it like with a tape measure? No no... I eyeballed it, so the dimensions may not be accurate. May be smaller than 500x500. I estimated the dimensions.

EDIT: Fixed OP.

Why are you speeding in the first place, if you adhere to the speed limit why worry yourself with them

The actual illegal thing is the speeding. Without that, the camera is an irrelevant waste of money.

We cry about lack of accountability in this country. About corruption and crime and people getting away with murder (figuratively or literally) .
Yet when we get caught breaking traffic laws we immediately start looking for loopholes in the method by which we were caught.
Complete lack of accountability...

I am all for against illegal, if at all, cameras. But interesting that they are only a problem when you got fined.

Hidden speed cameras completely defeats the purpose of a speed camera .
The purpose of speeding camera is to force road users to slow down.
This is only achieved when they are visible.

I have been in the UAE for a while now.
I drive the Abu Dhabi -Dubai road everyday for work +-125Km.
You will find visible cameras every couple of kilometers .
These cameras also check for other things like tailgating and average speed between the cameras .

*Drivers obey the speed limit strictly as there is no chance to get away with speeding.
Thus the roads are as safe as can be even if the speed limit is set to 140Kmph.

* You do get the odd local that obviously do not care that they are over the limit and will get fined but do not care as they are obviously swimming in money and happily accepts the fines willingly.

Hidden cameras have only one use and that is collecting money.
Getting a speeding ticket a couple of weeks down the line after the offence serves no purpose other than income generation for the traffic department.

There is nothing wrong with collecting money from law breakers. What is sad is that the money goes to KFC and other VIP's.

Just ignore the fine. I thought everyone already knew that you don't have to give Ramaposha all your money. He has enough.
